Obituary for
Mary Marlene Lacroix
A gentle, kind and loving soul, our mother Marlene passed away peacefully in her sleep on March 5, 2024, while in the Palliative Care unit at the Grey Nuns Hospital. Heaven just gained another angel.
Left to mourn is her daughter, Karen (Lanny) Reichenbaugh; son, Clint (Lisa) Lacroix and son, Blain (Robyn) Lacroix; and her three beautiful grandchildren, from Clint and Lisa: Devlynn, Keaton and Maielle. Mom was predeceased by her mother, Irene McCarty; father, John McCarty; sister, JoAnne Grant; and brothers, Arthur McCarty and Clair McCarty.
Mom was born on May 8, 1939, at the Vegreville General Hospital. As the first-born child, she took great pride in helping her mom take care of her siblings and doing chores alongside her cousins on the shared family farm in Vegreville. As a feisty little lady who needed the big city, she moved to Edmonton to realize her dreams of independence.
Being a wife and mother was always a priority for her and eventually she settled into her career as an insurance agent. She went on to purchase her own agency, R.C. Palmer Agencies, servicing hundreds of clients turned friends with her warm, friendly personality and professional understanding of her business. She eventually sold her agency to a larger broker and continued to work alongside the new owners until she finally retired at the age of 71. She also shared her families love of horses, taking us to riding lessons and countless hours spent at horse shows, she just loved it all. A master knitter and a crochet queen, she spent much of her retirement knitting donation caps, mittens and booties for the preemie babies at nearby hospitals.
Mom was your good luck charm if you were a gambler! She was in her element at Northlands Park Racetrack and knew all the trainers and jockeys and was quite the winning handicapper. We couldn’t wait to hear her stories of how she picked the winners (ok, so it was always the grey horse with the pink blinkers) and how many tickets she cashed that day. She even won $10,000 on a Super Lotto scratch ticket! And Bingo, forget about it, she won there too pretty much everytime she played! She then spent the majority of her bingo winnings at the coin claw machine collecting stuffed animals that she shared with kids whenever she had the opportunity.
The family would like to thank Dr. Murji and the nurses of Unit 52 and Unit 43 at the Grey Nuns Hospital for their kind and compassionate care of our mom during her time there.
At mom’s request, no formal service will be held. A Celebration of Life will be held at Riverside Cemetery in Vegreville this summer.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to your local animal shelter.
