Obituary
Mrs. Sheila Anne Brotherton (nee: Quigley)
Born August 22, 1939, in Trochu, Alberta; Sheila passed away peacefully into the arms of the Heavenly Father on September 6th, 2023, at the age of 84. She spent the final days of her life surrounded by family and friends.
Sheila was the youngest of five siblings all of which were much older than her. She grew up in Three Hills until her father’s retirement when she was 11, when the family moved to Vancouver. Due to her father’s health the family moved back to Edmonton before Sheila entered high school, leaving several good friends back in B.C. Daunted with the thought of going to a school the size of Strathcona High; Sheila convinced her parents to let her to attend high school at Concordia College in east Edmonton. This is where she met her future husband, Lawrence (Larry) Brotherton.
Sheila and Larry were married in 1959 and spent 64 years together, raising three children. The family lived in Calgary, Castor, Edmonton, and Red Deer until 1985, when Larry became an ordained minister and was called to Wapella and Davidson, SK. This move was very emotional to Sheila as she left her kids and two new grandchildren back in Alberta. In the 1990s, Larry and Sheila moved back to Alberta to be closer to their family, with stops in Standard and Wetaskiwin, before finally retiring in Red Deer. Larry and Sheila made friends wherever they went and those cherished friendships continue to this day.
Sheila was a stay-at-home mom for many years. When the kids were older, she went to work at Mountview Drugs and Sunnybrook United Church in Red Deer. Later, she worked as a typesetter and editor at the Whitewood Herald and Strathmore Standard newspapers. Sheila was active in the community, supporting her kid’s sports activities and associations. She was also active in the church participating on committees, women’s groups and fulfilling the unsung role of Pastor’s wife.
Sheila missed the ocean, returning often to wander the beaches in search for a special rock, shell or “Gabriola jewel”. This was a passion she inherited from her mom. In retirement, Larry and Sheila made annual trips to visit family on Vancouver Island and had a particular fondness for the Seaside Motel at Parksville bay. Larry and Sheila took several trips and cruises with family and friends, visiting Hawaii, Ireland, Alaska, the Caribbean, and the Mediterranean.
Sheila was very proud of her family and loved being Grandma and Great Grandma or GG. She loved to watch the games, dance recitals and other special events of her grandchildren. Sheila is survived by: son Mark (Rebecca) and their family, Jennifer (Jordan), Jacqlyn (Brad), Kimberley (Mike), Kathryn, Amanda (Spencer); daughter Kelly and her family, Jared (Kara), Shaun-Elise, and Bryce; son David (Heather) and their sons Thomas, Samuel, and Adam; and six great grandchildren. Sheila was predeceased by her husband Larry, father Samuel, mother Annie, brother Melville, sisters Eileen, Elizabeth, and Marjorie, and great granddaughter Brooklyn.
Many thanks for the care and compassion to all of staff of Unit 32 of Red Deer Regional Hospital.
Memorial Celebration of Life to be held October 23rd at 11:00 am at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, 18 Selkirk Ave, Red Deer Alberta. A private internment at Red Deer Cemetery will follow later that afternoon.
