Leonard Clayton Lassiter Obituary
Our family are sad to announce the passing of our remarkable brother, Leonard Clayton Lassiter, whose life began in Chin, Alberta, on October 1, 1932, and peacefully concluded in Strathmore, Alberta, on May 15, 2024, at the Agecare Sagewood senior’s lodge. Many thanks are extended to the doctors and staff at the Strathmore Hospital, and staff and caretakers at Sagewood who looked after our brother compassionately for the last four years of his life.
Born to O.B. Lassiter and Mary Alice (Archer) Lassiter, Leonard was raised on their family farm near Chin. He was a bachelor throughout his life, and did not have children of his own, but did teach Lynne’s son Justin and daughter Judy how to weld when they were teenagers.
Leonard worked with his brothers on the family farm in Makepeace, Alberta, until he was 28. He then went out to home stead in BC and ended up on his friend Kirk Finch’s family farm, near Hixon BC. The Finch family, which included Eunice, Karen, Darcy, and Emma, grew up with Leonard repairing and welding farm equipment and machinery and helping with the cattle. Leonard lived there in a house he built, for close to sixty years. The Finches looked after Leonard when he was getting on in years and he looked upon them all with affection and respect.
With a gifted mind that thrived on detail, Leonard was known for his mechanical work and welding repairs on vehicles and farm equipment and creating mechanical metal inventions or parts as required. His prowess in welding saw him create hand-forged tools that not only served a purpose but were highly valued in the timber industry. These tools were sold in the USA by Timber Tools and in Canada were purchased by Cochrane Sawmills AB, among other buyers.
Leonard was a man of diverse interests. He was an avid reader of current politics and he possessed a deep-seated passion for military history. He also had a profound respect and love for nature. He whittled a cane for himself from a knotted yew tree root he came across; he cultivated caring in turn for a toad, an old rooster, a kit fox, and a parade of beloved cats. His approach to life was one of kindness and curiosity, and he was always eager to share a tale or listen to one.
Leonard leaves behind his siblings Nina Jensen of Lumby, Byron Lassiter of Edmonton, Tobi Hentze, Caral Beagle, and Lynne Lassiter, all of Calgary, and Judy Schelske of Strathmore.
As we honor Leonard’s life, we also acknowledge the family members who predeceased him, including his parents, Alice and Oscar Lassiter; his siblings, baby Shirley Mae, baby Eric Bruce, sister Mildred Nelson, and recently this year her son Dan Nelson; sister Pat Reimer; Nina’s son Eric Ferguson; Byron’s daughter Natalie Lassiter (Hajduk); and brother Stan Lassiter in 2022. Also we remember sister-in-law Hazel (Freeman) Lassiter, brother-in-laws Roy Nelson, Ernie Ferguson, Abe Reimer, Jake Reimer, and Neils Jensen.
Today, as we reflect upon Leonard’s life, we celebrate a man who lived fully by his own rules and resources. His absence will be felt by his family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to cross paths with him.
His funeral will be held on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, at Wheatland Funeral Chapel, 202 Lakeside Blvd. (Strathmore) at 2:00 p.m.. He is to be interred in the Bassano cemetery with a graveside service at a later date TBA.
