Karen Anne Nelson Obituary
It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend Karen Anne Nelson of Carseland, Alberta on August 8, 2024 at the age of 81 years.
She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 56 years, Drewe Nelson, children Stephanie and Cameron, grandchildren Dahlia (Drake and Stephanie) Soren and Marae (Cameron and Karen), her twin brother Keith Rogers and sister-in-law Debbie, her nieces, nephews, extended family, and all the wonderful friends she made through her life.
Karen was born Sept 18, 1942, in the small town of Star City, Saskatchewan to parents Arthur and Mildred Rogers. She grew up in the town of Melfort and enjoyed telling her grandkids stories of her as a child curling on frozen ponds and going to school in a hay wagon with hot rocks to stay warm in the winter. Once she graduated high school, Karen attended nursing school at the Saskatoon City Hospital, graduating with the Class of ‘64 and making many friends she would keep for the rest of her life. In 1965, Karen and three of those friends went on the trip of a lifetime and spent 3 months in Europe. She moved to Vancouver Island to pursue a nursing career, and it was during this time she would meet her future husband and start a family. After several more moves and the birth of her daughter, Stephanie, Karen moved to Carseland, Alberta in 1977 when Drewe took over the family farm. It was here that she kept a huge garden, cooked many holiday meals, and saw her two children leave and start families of their own.
When the local town of Strathmore built a hospital, Karen went back into nursing. She worked as a nurse at the Strathmore Hospital from 1985 until she retired in 2005. After retirement she was fortunate to spend lots of time with family and travel to places like Thailand, Australia, and Hawaii.

The family also wishes to send a special thank you to the staff at Strathmore Hospital palliative care unit for their love and compassion. Spending her final days in a place that was familiar and seeing faces she knew provided more comfort than you will ever know.
