Darlene Rita Vasseur Obituary
Mother – Partner – Sister – Oma – Friend
Darlene Rita Vasseur (nee McAlister), beloved partner of Harry James Thomasitz and darling mother to Tammy Vasseur, Michelle Kenney and Pamela (Ian) Anderson, passed away peacefully in her sleep at 6:39am on June 24, 2024 in Strathmore hospital surrounded by her family.
Darlene is survived by her Partner Harry, her three daughters; Tammy, Michelle and Pamela, her seven grandchildren; Christopher, Spencer, Taylor, Angel, Harlene, Kaydin and Kahlan, her three brothers; Al (Barb) McAlister, Douglas (Christine) McAlister and Rick (Diana) McAlister, her three sisters in law; Monica (Jim) Barbaro, Shirley (Don) Turner and Sonya (Mark) Jobson, her very best friend of 53 years; Carol Brown and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. She is predeceased by her brother; Kenneth McAlister (Deceased Mar 26, 1958), her parents; Wayne McAlister (Deceased July 30, 2023) and Betty Lou Bloudoff (nee Higbee) (Deceased May 22, 1980) and her mother and father in law; Harry Thomasitz (Deceased Feb 8, 2024) and Edith Thomasitz (Deceased Sept 19, 2021).
Darlene was born in Blairmore, AB. Sadly, not much is known about her childhood and adolescence, but one thing we know is that she spent a fair amount of time in foster care. Of that time period, there were two families who fostered her, that she had expressed memories of happiness with. Reverend Walter Schoepp (Deceased November 21, 2004) and his wife Emerald (Deceased April 19, 2024) and the Marshall’s (first names unknown).
Darlene loved making delicious meals and baking for all of her family – her hamburger goulash, rice pudding, peanut butter and fub-a-dub cookies were among some of the favorites loved by everyone. No matter how many times we all tried, we could never get the recipes quite right – there’s no way to replicate the love that she put into her food. Some of her favorite ways to spend time were fishing with her partner Harry and his father Harry Senior, bowling, camping, playing card games (especially Skip-Bo) and having coffee visits with friends and family.
Darlene was known for offering help to anyone who needed it, even when it was beyond her capacity to do so. Family, friend or stranger – she would always find a way to “make some room” to meet other people’s needs.
She will be fondly remembered by all who knew her for her quick wit, contagious laughter, beaming smile, unwavering love and incredible strength.
Darlene’s family wishes to extend the utmost gratitude to the Doctors, Nurses and healthcare aides at Strathmore hospital, for the exceptional care they provided to Darlene, and the kindness and compassion they showed to all of us.
A celebration of life will be held to honor Darlene on July 27th, 2024.
