Sean Darrel Van Straten
1956 – 2024
Sean Van Straten was born on November 2, 1956, in Red Deer, Alberta. As the first grandchild in the Nanning Van Straten family, his birth marked a new chapter in their family history. His early years were spent on a dairy farm, where he developed a deep connection with nature.
In 1965, the family relocated to a farm near Fenn, Alberta. This move brought new experiences and opportunities for Sean. He attended school in Big Valley and Erskine, where he excelled in sports, particularly baseball and track and field. His mother, recognizing the spark in Sean, fanned it into a flame, leading him to excel in baseball and track and field.
Sean’s artistic side was not left behind. He found a canvas in leather, crafting beautiful pieces that were a testament to his creativity. After high school, Sean, like a bird ready to take flight, moved to Edmonton, marking his transition into adulthood.
At 19, Sean married and embarked on a career in real estate. His professional journey reflected his diverse interests and adaptability. He pursued golfing and flying, earning a commercial pilot license, a testament to his determination and love for challenges.
Sean’s life took a new turn when he discovered his passion for construction. He started his own company, designing and building homes in Edmonton. His work reflected his attention to detail and commitment to creating spaces that families could call home.
Sean later transitioned into car sales, a field that allowed him to share his extensive knowledge of vehicles. He became a father to Sophia Oblitas Van Straten in 2003. However, health challenges in 2004 altered his life significantly, leading him to seek support from various sources.
In 2009, Sean adopted his dog Romeo, who brought him immense joy for 15 years. He found solace in the Sterlings Men’s group and spiritual organizations like the Catholic Church and Sukyo Mahikari. These connections provided him with a sense of belonging and helped him navigate the challenges of life.
Sean’s life was a testament to resilience, adaptability, and the power of community. His story is a reminder of the strength of the human spirit and the impact one person can have on those around them. His memory will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
In the end, Sean’s life was not just about the milestones he achieved, but about the lives he touched along the way. From the homes he built that will shelter families for years to come, to the wisdom he imparted to his daughter Sophia, his legacy is one of enduring impact. His journey serves as a reminder that our lives are not measured by our accomplishments, but by the love we leave behind. Sean’s memory will continue to inspire and comfort those who knew him, a testament to a life well-lived.
Sean is survived by his daughter Sophia Oblitas Van Straten, sisters: Charlene (Joseph) Dubrule, Kathleen (Ken) Sundsten; brother Dwayne Van Straten; as well as numerous nephews and nieces; great nieces and nephews other relatives and dear friends.
