Delmer Tweit of Stettler, Alberta, beloved husband of Lucille, passed away very peacefully with family by his side on July 11, 2024 at the age of 83 years.
Delmer (“Del”) was born on August 10, 1940, in Stettler, Alberta to parents, Bjarne & Frieda, who farmed in the Red Willow and Stettler areas.
Del met Lucille in Stettler, along with her two children, Charmaine and Kevin in 1976. Del & Lucille were married on April 9, 1977 and soon after had a baby boy, Travis, in February 1978, followed by twin boys, Colin & Craig, in October 1978, both of whom did not survive.
Del graduated from Stettler High School in 1958. Soon after, he began his career at the County of Stettler in 1960, where he worked for 35 years until his retirement in 1995 at the age of 55. Delmer was an important and valued member of the County, where he held many positions throughout the years including Development Officer and Assistant County Administrator.
As a young man, Delmer was an active member of the community. He was an avid curler winning many major bonspiels and championships, including back-to-back titles as the ‘world champion’ at the Midsummer Bonspiel in Nelson, BC. Del also served his community in many ways – he was an active member of the Kinsmen, K40 and the Elks Clubs in Stettler, he volunteered as an Elections Returning Officer on numerous occasions, delivered food hampers at Christmas, and he served on the Board of the Stettler & District Handibus Society. After retirement from the County, he also served as Mayor of the Village of Rochon Sands for many years.
Del & Lucille liked to build houses, the first of which was “the yellow house” east Stettler, where Del passively farmed a half section of land. In 1990, Del & Lucille built their second new home (“the brick house”) one mile east of the yellow house. Del’s creative side shone through as he designed this unique bungalow himself. He would eventually design his final home (“the lake house”) which was built in 2001 at Rochon Sands on Buffalo Lake, where Del & Lucille lived until 2023 before moving back to Stettler.
After his retirement, Del & Lucille spent over 20 years golfing and enjoying the blue skies of Chandler, Arizona where they had a winter home in the Sunbird Golf Resort. This is where Del fed is creative side even further by taking up many hobbies, including rug hooking and wood carving. Although Del would never admit to it, at Sunbird, he was considered an expert carver that others would look to for advice. Delmer and Lucille enjoyed the three cruises they went on throughout the years, The Mexican Riviera, Hawaii and Alaska.
Del enjoyed spending his time with Lucille in Arizona and at their home in Rochon Sands. You could always find Delmer at the lake, reading or carving in his big blue chair, playing solitaire in his office, watching the lake and the birds, watching his kids and grandkids in the boat or skiing, tending to the barbeque, playing crib, watching a Stamps game, and of course, enjoying a Bacardi white rum & Pepsi, lots of ice.
Del passed away very peacefully with Lucille by his side, holding his hand.
Besides his loving wife, Lucille, Delmer is survived by children Charmaine (Dave) Hollings, Kevin (Becky) Bazylinski, Travis (Loranne) Tweit; Grandchildren Hayley Hollings, Chloe Hollings, Chase Tweit, Cole Tweit, Brody Tweit, Bryce Tweit, Aiden Bazylinski, Saylor Bazylinski; Sister Sharon Howie; Sister-in-law Sonja Tweit.
Delmer is predeceased by his parents, Bjarne and Frieda Tweit, children Craig and Colin Tweit, brother Ken Tweit, and brother-in-law Bill Howie.
