John Scrimger passed away peacefully on September 9, 2024.
John grew up in South Shields, England (and was a proud Geordie!). He later moved to London to attend boarding school at Royal Wanstead school. As a child, he got to meet Winston Churchill, who was one of the governors of the school. After graduating he moved to Canada in 1954, following the path of his older brother Joe who was already living there. John studied physics at the University of Saskatchewan and attained his Ph.D. in Medical Physics in Toronto. He met his wife Stefanie in Saskatoon, in biology class at U of S. They were married in 1964 and have three children: Jillian (Carl), Rufus (Kim), and Duncan (Alana). After a brief stint in Baltimore, he moved to Edmonton where he worked at the Cross Cancer Institute. John thoroughly enjoyed his time at the Cross, and made many good friends there. He loved teaching, and trained many graduate students over the years. He served as the director of Medical Physics, and was well respected by colleagues across the country.
John and Stefanie raised their family in Edmonton. In 1983, they spent a year at Oxford, doing a sabbatical there and travelling around England with the family. In 1992 they moved to Brentwood Bay, B.C., where John worked at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria and later a contract position at a hospital in Bellingham, Washington. After retiring, John and Stef enjoyed spending time on Vancouver Island before moving back to Edmonton in 2017 to be closer to their family including their five grandchildren. John is pre-deceased by Stefanie who died in July 2023. We miss them both and cherish the memory of our time together.
