“Even though the past year was challenging, I had a great life.”
Raise a glass of rye and water and let us share our story about our dad.
On August 31, 2024, we lost our dad, grandfather, and great-grandfather at the age of 89.
Allan Bernard Harnack was born in Irricana, Alberta , on March 29th, 1935. He grew up on a farm between Irricana and Beiseker. Coming from a family of six and being the second youngest , Dad learned the values of hard work on the farm and passed those lessons to us kids.
At the age of 16, Dad left home and moved to the city. He worked at various odd jobs until he secured a position at Trans Mountain Pipeline. By 20, he had his own Kenworth truck and in 1966, he founded Superior Equipment Haulers, which became the largest privately owned trucking company in Western Canada.
In 1956, he met our mom Jan and was married in 1959. Soon after, Holly came along. Then, a year and half later, to the surprise of both of them , the twins, Perry and Terry, were born. Can you see why he loved his rye and water – three kids just a year and a half apart?
Dad’s hands were full, but he always made time for his family. We were a camping family, and he enjoyed our tradition with us and our mom until she passed away in 2008. He enjoyed bowling, curling, playing crib, gardening and he loved the casino. In 2015, he met Anna and we teased him about having a girlfriend at 80 years old. Dad started to giggle again, and for 9 years , Anna and Dad shared many activities together.
Our dad seldom missed a family celebration and was usually the first one there to get a good seat and watch the family roll in. He was proud of his grandkids: Jordan (Stephanie ), Teryn (Ben), Sydney, and Josh. The family grew even larger with his great-grandchildren: Nigel, Rosa, Theo and Poppy.
The best way to describe our father is that he loved his family and was always happy to see you. He was a quiet man with strong opinions, easy-going with a stubborn streak. He had inner strength and a big heart, especially towards Mom when she fell ill; he was her rock and ours as well.
We take great comfort in the fact that he lived independently and exactly how he wanted until the end of his days. That is a remarkable thing.
We will miss you, Dad, but the memories will last forever. Until we meet again.
Holly, Perry (Jo-Anne) , Terry(Laurie)
As per Dad’s wishes we will have a private family celebration of life at a later date. If you would like to make a donation in our Dad’s name, please donate to the University Hospital Foundation.
