Mr. Terry Broome passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 4, 2023 at the age of 77 years. Terry was born in Listowel, Ontario in 1946, to Spence and Marjorie Broome. He was the eldest of five children.
Terry grew up in Atwood, Ontario on a farm with his parents and assisted in the care of his younger siblings. He received special consent to join the Navy at the age of seventeen years, where he served as a Radar Plotter. After serving in the Navy, Terry obtained his Certificate as an Oil and Gas Fitter for Residential and Commercial Properties. He went on to obtain his Class 1A driver’s license and began long haul trucking while living in Ontario.
In the spring of 1966, Terry met his future wife, Lois, through a mutual friend. Lois recalls meeting Terry as “the guy she knew she would marry one day”. Terry and Lois were married in 1967 and recently celebrated their fifty-sixth wedding anniversary. They have three children, Barbara, Thomas, and Shari.
Terry was very close to his maternal grandfather, “Dad Smith”. He often told stories to Terry about the beauty of the Peace River country, which intrigued Terry. This became his future vision. In 1978, Terry and Lois packed up the children in their van (fashionably outfitted in orange and brown fur) towing a converted horse trailer (covered wagon) and headed west.
In 1979, Terry’s career in Municipal Government started as a Development Officer at Improvement District 21, located in Worsley, Alberta. Through the years, Terry worked in management and contracting positions in Improvement Districts, Municipal Districts and Counties, throughout Alberta and in Nunavut, Northwest Territories. He was instrumental in the conversion of ID 14 into Yellowhead County and became a mentor for other managers to assist them in this process. Terry participated in a Municipal Government Exchange Program and was blessed to have travelled to Thailand to develop relationships that became friendships that touched his life.
While working in Worsley, Terry and Lois purchased property and started pig farming. This was a fulfillment of Terry’s dream to farm. He continued to work in the office during the day and farmed at night and on weekends.
Terry had a unique silent personality with a dry sense of humor and a “sh** eating grin” that went well with his suspenders that were a staple in his attire. He made life-long friends in each place he worked, and he cherished each of those friendships.
In 1990, Terry and Lois settled in Carrot Creek, Alberta, on a beautiful property that became the location of the annual July 1st weekend family reunions, Christmas gatherings and other special time spent with their children, grandchildren, siblings, numerous nieces and nephews, and friends. Many laughs, stories and memories were created during this precious time.
Family held a special place in Terry’s heart. He had an avid love for fishing and carpentry which he shared with his grandchildren at every opportunity. He enjoyed the time spent watching the grandchildren play hockey, watching the Stampeders Football games, and camping and fishing with Lois and their friends Bob and Shiela.
Unfortunately, Terry developed Alzheimer’s which forced a move to Red Deer, Alberta to be closer to family and healthcare. Terry embraced this disease head on with the strength and determination that he had throughout his life, with the unwavering love and support from Lois. He was able to meet each of his great grandchildren which brought smiles to his face at each visit. Terry touched every life that was lucky enough to have met him and will be forever missed by all.
Terry will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Lois, his children, Barbara (David), Thomas (Rachel) and Shari (David), his grandchildren, Brendan, Matthew, Andrew, Brandon, Charlie, Sean, Braden and Carson, and his great grandchildren, Payton, Brynnlee, Harper, Sophia, Jason, and Stella, as well as his siblings, nieces and nephews, and many friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Spence and Marjorie Broome, and his sister, Shirley.
A Celebration of Terry’s Life will be held at Parkland Funeral Home, 6287 – 67 A Street (Taylor Drive), Red Deer, Alberta on Saturday, October 21, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. If desired, Memorial Donations in Terry’s honour may be made directly to the Alzheimer’s Society Alberta and Northwest Territories at Alzheimer.ca/ab/en.
