With heavy hearts, we are sad to announce the passing of Mr. Robert ‘Bob’ George Masciangelo at Extendicare Michener Hill, Red Deer, Alberta, where he resided for the last eight months, on Tuesday, December 12, 2023 at the age of 86 years. A good long life – well lived.
Bob was born in Delia, Alberta on November 2, 1937, the third youngest in a family of eleven. The family eventually moved to Calgary from the farm. Bob completed his education at Notre Dame College in Wilcox, Saskatchewan, in the late 1950’s, where he was a proud alumnus of the Notre Dame Hounds.
Working in the Oilfield took him to Oxbow, Saskatchewan, where he met and married Helen Barker in 1958. Bob continued to work in the Oilfield, and the family ended up in Fort St. John, British Columbia in 1969. In 1972, Bob and Helen ventured into the family Restaurant Business. Hannigan’s was the first one and that evolved to Masciangelos Beefeeders with locations in Fort St. John, British Columbia, and Grande Prairie, Alberta. They added a third restaurant in Grande Prairie, aptly named, Bob’s Other Place. The love of the business eventually lead them to Red Deer in 1987, with the opening of Duster’s Saloon and Masciangelo’s. After the restaurant business, Bob returned to the Oilfield as a “super salesman”. He retired at the age of eighty years. Bob loved all games and sports, and often had wagers on several games with several people.
He leaves a huge hole in the hearts of his family and friends who were always entertained by his stories, thrill-seeking antics, and wonderful sense of humor. He bubbled to the top at all gatherings, family and social events. He is fondly remembered as Crazy Uncle Bob, The Wop, Wopper, Barbar, Papa and Pops. Bob will be lovingly remembered by his wife of sixty-five years, Helen, his daughter, Teresa (George) Reid, his grandson, Kody (Taryn) Roblin, his great grandsons, Wyatt and Wesley Roblin, his daughter, Shelley Masciangelo, and his son, Robert (Buck) Masciangelo. He will also be dearly missed by his sisters, Isabelle Watson and Joanne (Bill) Luca, his sister-in-law, Sheila Marshall, and his brothers-in-law, Lary Barker and Gary (Ruth) Barker, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Bob was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Marie Masciangelo, his eight siblings, Johnny Marshall, Julius Marshall, Nickolas Marshall, Norman Marshall, Anna Stein, Edna Masciangelo, Lena Weigel, Joyce Masciangelo and his son-in-law, Alex Frank.
