DEATRICH, Kathleen
1947 – 2024
Kathleen ‘Terry’ Theresa Deatrich of Red Deer, Alberta, born in Ottawa, Ontario, passed away at Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre on Friday, November 1, 2024 at the age of 77 years. In her youth, Terry attended Notre Dame boarding school in Wilcox, Saskatchewan. Soon after, she moved to Cranbrook, British Columbia where she met and married the love of her life, Warren Deatrich. Terry and Warren eventually moved to the West Coast of British Columbia and enjoyed many years together with frequent trips to Vancouver Island, and Victoria, which Terry loved. Terry worked as a bartender and waitress. Patrons marveled at her ability to remember a dozen orders without writing them down. She later worked as a successful retail manager in a high-end clothing store where sales skyrocketed under her supervision. Her passion for spirituality, philosophy, politics and personal growth led her to explore many facets of the world, its complexities and beauty, and fostered a deep understanding of herself and others. She studied Science of the Mind, a philosophical platform that bridged science and psychology. She meditated daily. Her studies branched off into other avenues of psychological exploration as well – mindfulness, various opposing yet complimentary religions, and musings about the nature of life and death. She was wise but somehow also possessed the curiosity of a child who marvels at things for the very first time. She was highly intelligent, passionate, and above all else, she was unrelentingly kind. She never passed by a homeless person without opening her wallet. Her heart was pure and devoid of bad intentions. When she was young, she loved to dance. She loved Jazz and the Blues. She was a beautiful traveler in her mind and in the world whose trips to Victoria, Long Beach, Salt Spring Island, and Mexico were among her favorite adventures. She was humble, gentle, generous and compassionate. She was a timeless beauty, inside and out, and she will never be forgotten by everyone who was blessed to meet such a radiant soul. She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Tammy (Russ), Sandy, Sean (Lara), and Trisha (Chris); and her grandchildren, Rachel, Sean, Ben and Zack who will hold her in their hearts forever. Though young, her great grandchildren, Asher, Lucy, Beckham, and soon to arrive, Milo will, as they grow up hear stories about what a beautiful woman she was. Her sister, Pat, with whom she shared a special bond, will always love and cherish the memories of the time they shared together. Her brother, Dan (Sheila) will love her forever and remember what a wonderful older sister she was to him. She will likewise be remembered by her extended in-law family – Sharon, Denny, Wendy Roger, Jeff and Sheri. Her lifelong friends, Joyce and Bernie will miss her laughter and the companionship they shared over coffee or wine. Terry was predeceased by her husband and soulmate, Warren Deatrich, her mother, Jean Mullen, and her brothers, Jim and John. While Terry passed away peacefully, listening to her favorite meditation music, Sean and Lara held her hands to ease her passage home. Her children who she deeply loved, and anyone who was blessed to know her, will love and remember her forever – her kindness, beauty and radiant passion for life.
“We are born of love. Love is our mother” (Rumi).
See you on the other side.
A Celebration of Life will take place in Victoria, British Columbia in the spring of 2025 when the cherry blossoms Terry enjoyed so much will bloom (exact date to be determined). Arrangements in care of Parkland Funeral Home and Crematorium, 6287 – 67 A Street (Taylor Drive), Red Deer. 403.340.4040.
