O’BRIEN, Joseph
1950 – 2024
Mr. Joseph Patrick O’Brien passed away suddenly, at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre, Red Deer Alberta, on Monday, December 9, 2024 at the age of 74 years. Born on January 16, 1950, Joe was the eldest son of Leo and Theresa O’Brien of Ferryland, Newfoundland. Joe was welcomed openly into Betty’s family and created special bonds with each member in their time together. Joe and Betty lived a beautiful life together in Red Deer, Alberta, surrounded by family and friends. Whether it was going out for a dance at the Legion, out for a drive, road trips watching Mackenzie play hockey, or playing cards, Joe loved a good laugh and to hear a good song, especially Irish music. Although his new life was in Alberta, Joe’s heart continued to call him home to family and friends in Newfoundland. He loved his grandchildren and reveled in hearing about their sports and activities. He was affectionately known to them as Pop from Newfoundland, and he loved to send the “scatter $5” as a reward for a goal scored or a great game played. Kieran, Marrin, Declan, and Eilidh Grace, will miss their Pop, but always remember the times they spent together and the stories he would tell them about growing up. Joe started his career as a linesman with Newfoundland Hydro in Churchill Falls in 1974, and moved back to the Island in 1980, where he worked with Schlumberger Canada until he retired. Joe was known as a great worker, a company man, and a loyal friend. Staying in touch with colleagues, friends, and family, whether they were near or far, Joe loved to catch up with people and was known for calls to reminisce with friends or loved ones. Joe will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Betty of Red Deer, Alberta; his daughter, Carla (Neal Alderson) Bedford of Nova Scotia; his son, Stephen O’Brien, of Torbay, Newfoundland; and his grandchildren, Kieran, Declan, and Eilidh Grace O’Brien, and Marrin Alderson. Also mourning Joe’s loss are his brothers, Junior, John (Shirley), and Bernard (Wendy); and his sister, Marguerite (Jack Bavis). Joe will also be lovingly remembered by his stepson, Patrick (Karen) of Prince George, British Columbia; his stepdaughter, Dawn of Red Deer, Alberta; and his step grandchildren, Hannah, Mackenzie, Emma and Abi, all of Red Deer, Alberta. Joe was predeceased by his parents, Leo and Theresa; his daughter-in-law, Dr. Ellen MacPhee, and his sister-in-law, Patricia O’Brien. Cremation entrusted to Parkland Funeral Home and Crematorium, Red Deer, Alberta. Interment will be held in Newfoundland, at a later date. Condolences, memories and photos may be shared and viewed at www.parklandfuneralhome.com. Arrangements in care of Parkland Funeral Home and Crematorium, 6287 – 67 A Street (Taylor Drive), Red Deer. 403.340.4040.
