Mr. Henry Wiebe passed away peacefully, with his family by his side, in Red Deer, Alberta on Monday June 10, 2024 at the age of 92 years and 19 days. Henry was born May 22, 1932, in Warman, Saskatchewan, during the Great Depression and was raised in a large family by his mom, Sarah Wiebe. Times were hard and Dad started working at an early age on a Dairy Farm. He also spent time shoveling coal, painting, insulating, and installing the lathe prior to drywall. He also spent time in Edmonton and Athabasca working with his dad, Peter Wiebe, painting Chinese restaurants. In 1952, Dad found his passion and started framing houses with his brother, Ben Wiebe for Boychuk Construction.
In June of 1954, Dad married the love of his life, Anne Dyck, and they had two daughters and a son, while living in Saskatoon. Dad moved his family to Regina in 1962, and continued to work with his brother, Ben, and a combination of other workers who became dear friends. During these years, the work was hard, and temperatures could be extreme; yet still he found great satisfaction in his role. Dad spent much time reminiscing about the great times on the job and the fun had by all.
During their time in Regina, Dad and Mom added two more daughters to their family. They remained in Regina until 1978 and followed Boychuk to Red Deer. Dad continued to work in the Construction Industry until his early eighties and continued to do odd carpentry jobs after that well into his nineties. He was still commenting on the quality of work he saw and his desire to still be working. Those comments were fewer in the winter.
Although Dad’s many years of framing resulted in numerous injuries, he continued to work and enjoy it. Dad was old school, hammer, nails and dear God, “NO Chainsaws”! The stairs were his pride. He perfected that skill to an art. He built eight beautiful homes for his family over the years and left behind a legacy of workmanship we are all very proud of. He was the best framer in Red Deer.
Dad’s qualities as a father and grandfather far exceeded his reputation and expertise as a carpenter. Dad had an incredible sense of responsibility, work ethic, integrity, and an innate sense of right and wrong. He loved his family very much and adored his little “Hunny” to the very end. Dad’s sense of family responsibility was primary in his role as a dad and father. Some of our fondest memories include hot dog roasts on Sundays, running beside us to learn how to ride our bikes and sitting with him for a chat. He was a kind and gentle soul whose presence was enjoyed by all. Mom misses visiting with him, being teased by him, and having to listen to the same stories over and over, just in case she forgot.
Sadly, dad’s latest years were dominated by dementia. Although our names often slipped away, he always knew we were family. He passed before the dementia had a chance to change him, for which we are eternally grateful.
Henry left to mourn his departure, his wife of sixty-nine years, 11 months and 20 days, Anne; his children, Carol (Doug) DeWitt, Brenda (Brian) Brezden, Wayne (Jacqueline) Wiebe, Paula (Lonnie) Graham, and Roxanne (Craig) Stillings; his ten grandchildren, Rhonda Fitzgerald, Brett Ashbee, Sherri Giebelhaus (Ryan), Marcie DeWitt (Blake), Amory Ashbee, Megan (Byron) Smolanski, Luke (Tess) Graham, Erin (Blair) Kattler, Kate (Brady) Porter and Morgan Stillings; and his great grandchildren, Ash, Hunter, Olivia, Dominic, Ava, Austyn, Autumn, Jake, Lauren, Ryker, Nora, and Vinny.
Henry was predeceased by his parents, his stepfather, his siblings, and his great granddaughter, Aubrey Samantha Fitzgerald.
At dad’s request, no Funeral Service will be held. In lieu of flowers, if desired, Memorial Donations in Henry’s honor may be made directly to Habitat For Humanity Red Deer at www.habitatreddeer.ca.
