BILO, John
1972 – 2024
Dr. John Michael Bilo passed away on Sunday, November 24, 2024 at the age of 52 years. John was born on January 21, 1972, at Edmonton, Alberta, raised as an only child to Ukrainian Immigrants, Yan and Maria Bilo. John graduated at the top of his class from St. Francis Xavier High School in 1989. He obtained his BSc in Electrical Engineering from the U of A in 1994, his Medical Degree from the U of A in 1998, and then completed his five-year Residency in Radiology in 2003, in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Over the years, John received awards and was recognized for his many academic achievements while pursuing his education. John had a BRILLIANT mind! John came from humble beginnings and was very proud of all he had accomplished academically to give his family a good life. John started his career as a Radiologist in Kentville, Nova Scotia at Valley Regional Hospital, where he worked from 2003 – 2012. These were some of his happiest years, personally and professionally. John married Rachel (nee Westropp) in 2005, and they welcomed their first child, Ethan in 2006, Sophie in 2008, and Eva in 2011. John was an extremely proud father and loved his children immensely. He enjoyed vacationing with them, watching their sporting events and teaching them words from his native language, Ukrainian. John moved with his family to Red Deer in 2012, to get back to his roots and be closer to his family. He worked as a Radiologist at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre and at CAMIS from 2012, until his passing. John was very well liked by both his colleagues and friends. He was affectionately known to some as ‘Bib’ and ‘Perogie’. He was a loyal friend to many, very generous and always there to lend a hand. He loved to travel, explore new places and had a great sense of humor. He lived a very carefree life and was very easy-going by nature. People were drawn to him, he loved his friends deeply and had long lasting friendships from childhood and from his medical schooling years that were very important to him. He was an animal lover and especially loved his pets, his dogs, Rex, Roscoe and his cat, Replay. John left a lasting impression on all those he met in his life and will be sorely missed by all that knew him. John will be lovingly remembered by his children, Ethan, Sophie and Eva; their mother and his friend, Rachel; his special brother-in-law, Amos Westropp (Yukon), and numerous family members and dear friends. John was predeceased by his parents, Yan and Maria Bilo.
