Mr. Dennis Earl Aberdeen of Pigeon Lake, Alberta passed away peacefully, with his family by his side, at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre on Sunday, May 5, 2024 at the age of 76 years. Dennis was born on February 13, 1948 in Edmonton, Alberta, and grew up in Edmonton. As a young boy, his parents entered him and his brother, Don into many local talent contests, where they sang songs by the Everly Brothers. That is when his love of music began. Later on, the brothers formed their own band “The Mourning After” and performed gigs around Edmonton. In later years, Dennis and Don performed many impromptu concerts around the bonfire at the lake, and their melodic voices, along with their two-part harmonies were enjoyed by many. Anyone who knew Dennis knew that his true home was at Pigeon Lake. He began visiting the lake at eighteen months of age and loved every minute he spent there, until he passed away. He traveled many miles during his working years in the Oil Patch; the roads always lead him back to his beloved cabin. On Friday nights, he would sit in the car and patiently wait for Karen to pack up food and clothes for their weekend visits there. Nothing made him happier than moving to the cabin to live there full-time, almost twenty-five years ago. Dennis could often be found sitting at his table, underneath the umbrella, on the front deck watching the flurry of activity of his children and grandchildren. Nothing made him happier than when people stopped by for a visit. Dennis was a huge sports fan. If tiddlywinks or basket weaving were sports, he would have been a fan! He was a passionate fan of the Edmonton Oilers. Even when his team was down on their luck, he always remained on the band wagon! He was also a fan of the Edmonton Elks, although he was not impressed by the change in the name of the team! He did not have an opinion on many things, but he made it known that the team’s new name was not the right choice. Dennis was known for his patience and kindness. He rarely raised his voice or got frustrated. He loved to tease, and he had a great sense of humour. He was a friend to many, and he enjoyed talking to people of all ages. He loved to feed the birds. He loved to have a pantry filled with chocolate. He loved his cell phone and he loved to take pictures. He loved a medium Tim Hortons double double with a dome lid. He loved his grand dogs, Chica and Tucker. He loved his family. Dennis will be lovingly remembered by his wife of fifty-three years, Karen, his children, Kelli (Jim) Stewart and Kevin Aberdeen; and his grandchildren, Kaylyn, Griffin (Kianna), Jason (Jorgia) and Kate (Dawson). He will also be sadly missed by his twin brother, Don Aberdeen; his older sister, Gayle (Harold) Kowalchuk; his sisters-in-law, Judy (Darrell) Johnston and Wendy (Dean) Foote; and his nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. Dennis was predeceased by his parents, Earl and Gert Aberdeen, his in-laws, Gordon Riley, and Al and Betty Phillips, and his sister-in-law, Darcy Aberdeen. A special thank you to the staff at the Wetaskiwin Hospital and Care Centre and the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre for their wonderful care of Dennis, and their kindness to our family. A Celebration of Dennis’s Life will be held at a later date. If desired, Memorial Donations in Dennis’s honor may be made directly to the Alberta Cancer Foundation at www.albertacancer.ca.
