Cheryl Kay Chudleigh (nee Bennett) of Blackfalds, Alberta, passed away at Red Deer, Alberta on Sunday, December 3, 2023 at the age of 76 years.
Cheryl was born and raised in Magrath, Alberta. She was always a lover of nature and took the greatest care of her many pets. Cheryl and her siblings grew up with their uncle, Cliff, living right next door. They enjoyed years of picnics, massive gardens in the backyard, and family swims in the Town Swimming Pool that Cheryl said was, “ALWAYS COLD”. Every year, the family participated in the pioneer parades of Magrath, where little Cheryl was proudly displayed and driven through town, sitting on the hood of her father’s car. Her mother loved to curl her hair in ringlets and her dad would polish her shoes.
In 1967, Cheryl married Cameron Dean Nelson, they had four children together, Jadene, Craig, Danny, and Jamie. They raised their family in Calgary, Alberta, until they divorced in 1979.
Cheryl then embarked on her own to raise her four kids, and shortly thereafter, met Jim Chudleigh, who would turn out to be her lifelong partner. Typically, weekends and holidays were spent with him and the kids. Off to the mountains they’d go; the kids getting to have their own fires, and the music playing from the open doors of the car, Jim adoring her the whole time.
After seven years of Jim’s relentless proposals, Cheryl and Jim married in 1986. He knew right off the bat who he wanted to spend the rest of his life with, and taking on four, terrorist little kids was no deterrent. They lived in Calgary for several years before starting a new seven-year adventure on their own in Comox, British Columbia, where they could both live in the fresh air and forests. When Cheryl wanted to be closer to her children and grandchildren, they moved to Blackfalds, Alberta, where she spent the next twenty years enjoying the landscape view from her living room window and having mid-December Christmas gatherings with their extended family and friends.
Cheryl was all about nature, animals, and kindness. Over the years, she brought many wonderful cats, and sometimes dogs, into her heart, home, and family. In her later years, as a loving grandmother and great grandmother, Cheryl was quiet and soft spoken – unless she was in attendance at one of the many rock concerts she went to with her son, Craig. Music was one of her favorite places to be, right in the middle of the sound that was loud and vibrating and taking her on musical journeys from the many bands and artists that sang to her soul. Her granddaughters fondly remember that she let them play in her finest clothes and jewelry when visiting her, and even letting them play with her delicate music box collection.
Cheryl will be lovingly remembered by her husband of thirty-seven years, James ‘Jim’ Louis Chudleigh and her three children, Jadene Huston, Craig Nelson, and Jamie Layton, her ten grandchildren, Jaylyn (Todd) Baxter, Ryan (Michaela) Brandley, Ashley (Kyle) McCabe, Madisen, Alyssa and Natalie Huston, Blake Nelson, and Christopher, Sydney, and Rachel Layton, and she was very blessed to have six great grandchildren. She will also be deeply missed by her sons-in-law, Terry Huston and Troy Layton, and her daughter in-law, Kimberly Nelson. She was predeceased by her parents, Dorothy (nee Miller) and Kay Bennett, her brother, Darwin Bennett and her son, Daniel Nelson.
Cheryl will be forever remembered in the many hearts she has touched throughout her life. May she rest in peace knowing we walk with her always in our hearts. Cheryl’s daughter Jamie writes: “Growing up, mom made sure us kids had the most magical Christmases from caroling in the car, picking out the grandest real fir tree, ding dong dash for the twelve days of Christmas, favorite holiday movies and letting us stay up late on Christmas Eve, the anticipation for Santa’s arrival was inevitable. She always knew what to say to make you feel like you were the most special person in her life. She was gentle, kind and incredibly loyal, especially to Jim, her kids, and her cats.”
