Theresa’s Obituary
Theresa (Terry) Regina Claughton (nee Neufeld).
Early in the morning of July 31st, surrounded by family she loved, Theresa at the age of 95 years, went peacefully into the arms of Jesus.
Terry was born June 8th, 1929 in Herbert, Saskatchewan. She was the 8th child of 10 children to Heinrick and Catherine (nee Penner) Neufeld. In a tiny farm home with no running water or heat, seven sisters shared one bedroom while the 3 brothers shared the other. Her father was a Pastor which is where her faith began and it was her unfailing faith that carried her through 95 years of life.
When she was seven years old, the family moved to Vancouver to be closer to extended family. In her late teen/young adult years, Terry worked at Riley’s Ice Company in Vancouver but soon followed her two older sisters to Calgary and then worked one summer at Banff Springs Hotel. She met the love of her life, Donald Claughton and they were married July 4th, 1956. They had three children: Donna (Terry Brunham), Karen (Carey Serhan) and Timothy (Bernadette). Donald was working for the Calgary Police so Theresa was a stay at home mom and bookkeeper.
Terry’s faith was a very important part of her life. She was involved in the church; leading choirs, CGIT, and sharing her joy of music with everyone. She loved to sing old hymns, with one of her favorite being “How Great Thou Art”.
Terry loved water fights, picking fruit from their Kelowna trees, red wine, watermelon and Roll Kuchen. Camping, boating, collecting sea shells, and reading were her favorite pastimes.
After Don’s passing in 2002, being free-spirited, Terry moved many times. She would pack up her belongings and head from Peace River to Calgary, then to Kelowna, east to Strathmore, back to Peace River, again to Kelowna, and finally to Calgary.
It was at Bethany Care Home in Calgary, that she spent her last months. Her walls were covered in photos of family and friends and her gathering of ceramic and wooden angels filled the shelves.
What a whirlwind of trials and tribulations life brought them. But there were also great joys and victories. Everywhere Don and Terry went, her love and faith went with her. She made a lasting impression on each place she lived.
Terry would say she was so blessed with having a family. Ten grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild will think of her fondly. She remembered all of their names and birthdates and was a very proud wife, mother, sister, grandmother and friend. Every night she would go through the list of those she loved – both family and friend – and pray for each one. A name was never forgotten … even in her last days.
Some of her last words were “Just love each other.” She loved everyone BIG and showed us all how to love with a big heart. We pray that her legacy be to love one other. She will be dearly missed, always celebrated and profoundly loved forever and ever.
As per her wishes, there will not be a memorial service. Her wishes were that when you enjoy a glass of red wine, you think of her and share a memory.
Cheers to our Mom, our Sister, our Oma, our beloved Theresa. We’ll love you forever and will always hold you close.
“Absolutley.”
