It is with deep sorrow and great sadness that we announce the passing of Matthew Andrew Shirakawa
on June 22, 2024 in Calgary, Alberta. He was twenty-nine.
Matthew was born in Toronto, Ontario, moved to Okotoks, Alberta in 2005, and most recently was living
in Calgary. Matthew loved being outdoors and was always up for an outdoor adventure in the
mountains. He especially enjoyed backcountry skiing, climbing and bouldering, as well as paddle
boarding, hiking, camping and spending time with friends and family. For about six years, Matthew
worked as a Child and Youth Care Counsellor and had a gift for connecting with youth. He managed to
find his way into everyone’s heart and was a favourite with both the youth he worked with and his
coworkers. He was calm, patient, empathetic, and had an amazing ability to make each moment he
spent with the kids meaningful.
Matthew is loved and will be forever remembered by his father Kerry Shirakawa, his mother Beverly
Campbell, his sister Claire Shirakawa, as well as aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and those who loved him.
We have so many wonderful memories with Matthew and sorely miss him.
A Funeral Service will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 300 Woodgate Road,
Okotoks, Alberta on Saturday, July 6, 2024, at 2:00 P.M..
