Mary Venita Donaldson passed away peacefully at age 96 on May 24, 2024 surrounded by family after a brief illness. She was residing at Millrise in Calgary.
Venita was born on August 9, 1927 to Len and Sarah Smith in Okotoks Alberta. She left school after grade 11 to support her family when her father left. Three years later she met and married Lynn Donaldson, the love of her life. They began an adventurous a journey through the oil and gas fields of Alberta, British Columbia and Michigan. A few of the locations they spent time at were: Turner Valley (always referred to as home), Longview, Redwater, Ashmont, Bruderheim, Bon Accord, Legal, St. Albert, Hay Lakes, Camrose, New Norway, Stettler, Edberg, Erskine, Big Valley, Red Deer, Atlee, Manyberries, Joffre, Gordondale, Edmonton, Millet, Beiseker, Calgary, Didsbury, Ft. St. John BC, Buick Creek B.C., and Traverse City Michigan. In 1964 they returned to live in Turner Valley permanently.
With the ongoing relocations from drilling site to site, mom was the glue that kept the family and household together. She was wife, mom, chef and teacher for Duane and Darrell. Correspondence courses were necessary for a year when living north of Ft. St. John at Buick Creek. This site was 80 miles from a town using cutline roads only. In addition to Oilfield obligations, Mom and Dad had a farm at Millet from 1960 to 1970 where they raised and sold quarter houses, it was a busy time.
On December 29, 1960 Dallas was born, the Donaldson family was now complete.
Lynn and Venita retired in 1986 and kept very active by sharing their time and knowledge with many organizations and charities in the Turner Valley region. Venita pursued countless new hobbies and interests with enthusiasm. She especially enjoyed her years volunteering with the St. George Anglican Church Women’s Guild.
