John Gary Voakes
July 11th, 1937, Langbank, Saskatchewan – August 1st, 2024 Okotoks, Alberta
Gary was raised in Kennedy Saskatchewan and also at his grandfather’s farm nearby where he enjoyed helping with daily chores, the cattle and the harvest. When he graduated high school, he signed on with one of the first seismic crews in Alberta. He came home the next Christmas, proposed to Patsy Connell, they were married in Kennedy, the town they grew up in and then off to make Alberta their forever home. He was one of the original Seismic Doodle bugs as they were called at the time. He travelled all over Western Canada, Quebec and Texas, and eventually had his own seismic company. Later he became a seismic data consultant for various oil companies.
Gary could build anything from a bookcase to an entire house and tried to fix everything even if he only had duct tape or a piece of wire to work with. He painted and he also created beautiful stained-glass windows.
Gary had a great love of playing hockey and riding horses. He played Hockey all of his life. In later years he skated almost every day and occasionally played a senior hockey game or two. He also still rode horseback into his 70s.
Gary, “Papa” was a wonderful grandpa who loved being with his grandkids.
He was a caring man who would help anyone and loved spending time with his family. He was a beloved husband, Dad, and Papa to his five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He will be remembered for his compassion and generosity.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Patsy Voakes (nee Connell), his sons Fredrick (Fred) Voakes, Garry Voakes and daughters Judy Brown (nee Voakes), Wendy Hunt (nee Voakes) and sister Elizabeth (Betty) Paget (nee Voakes)
Predeceased by his mother Pearl Voakes (Nee Penney) and father Fredrick Voakes, his brothers David Voakes, Wilfred (Willy) Voakes, and sister Margaret (Peggy) Petura (nee Voakes)
