Jessie May McNiven Obituary
Our mom, Jessie May McNiven (nee Hall), passed away on May 3, 2024 at the age of 94 years, in the Vulcan Extendicare, surrounded by family. Mom was born on the family farm on May 28, 1929, at Leeds Village Quebec, to Emily and George Hall. When mom was about 14, the family moved to Carstairs, Alberta, eventually relocating and settling in the Blackie area. There was no time for continued schooling so mom worked for different families in the area and made some long term friends.
One fateful night at a masquerade dance in Blackie, AB, Mom met Frank McNiven. After a brief engagement, they eloped in Carstairs on March 7, 1950. Mom and dad lived in a cook car, while dad built a house along highway 23, south of Herronton. Later, Mom and Dad bought land from Cecil Coy about a mile north of their original homestead. They moved with their four kids (at the time), to the big house. About three years later the couple welcomed their fifth child to the family. Mom and Dad continued to farm in the Herronton area until they retired.
Mom was a willing host to anyone that stopped by for a coffee, meal, game of cards or just a visit. Gardening, quilting, crocheting, knitting and embroidery were among moms’ favourite hobbies. Spending time with grandchildren and great grandchildren delighted her. Mom was a member of the Cottonwoods Good Deeds Club, Herronton Community Club, and supported dad in his many clubs and activities.
In May of 2021, mom decided to leave the farm she loved so much, and move to the Peter Dawson Lodge in Vulcan. Mom soon adapted to a new way of life there, and was re-acquainted with old friends and made many new friends. This was home to mom and she loved the staff and life at the lodge. Mom liked to take part in the activities and quite enjiebeing teased by some of the staff.
Mom is survived by her daughters, Ferne (Ed) Frotten, Evelyn (Dan) Love, son Bruce (Colleen) McNiven. She is also survived by daughter in law Emily McNiven, Willow Hall, and, very special friends Tudy Fowlie and Shirley and Jerry Murphy. Grand children Jake (Kim) Daniells, Kim (Paul) Fortin, Emily (Brett) Speight, Winston McNiven, Serena (Grant) Senchuk, Devin (Leanne) Stokes, Kit (Wanita) Love, Shannon (Casey) Bos, Nathan (Amanda) Love, Ian (Michelle) McNiven, and Brittany (Justin) Duguay. Step grandchildren Amy (Bryan) Van Eden, Megan Rennie, and Beth (Coltan) Povey, several great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Mom was predeceased by her husband Frank in 1999, son Harvey McNiven in 2010, daughter Linda Daniells in 2015, and son in law Greg Daniells in 2016. Her brothers, sisters, sisters-in-law, and brothers-in-law on both sides of the family as well as some nieces and nephews have predeceased her.
We want to thank the Administration and staff at the Peter Dawson Lodge, not only for the wonderful care mom received while there, but also for the meaningful relationships formed. Thank you, Doctor Hudson and the other doctors for the compassion and care mom received; the nursing and support staff of the Vulcan Hospital, and all the staff of the Vulcan Extended Care.
