Ellen May Nelson of High River passed away on Wednesday April 17th, 2024, at the age of 92 years with family by her side.
Ellen was born in Bassano, Alberta on November 1st, 1931, and lived at Southesk and Cassils before moving to Duchess, Alberta with her parents Daniel and Mary Vescarelli. Ellen married Hal Nelson on June 7th, 1951, in Lethbridge and had two children (daughter Beverly and son Barry) and the family lived in Brooks, Strathmore, Red Deer, and Ponoka. Ellen worked at the Treasury Branch before she retired and moved to a farm near Hays where Ellen enjoyed tending to her garden while Hal took up farming. Eventually Hal and Ellen settled in High River and enjoyed their final years together making great friends along the way. Ellen had a zest for life living independently until the final month of her 92 years. She enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening, and visiting with family and friends including their pets. Ellen’s fiery spirit will be missed by many.
Ellen was predeceased by her husband Hal, parents Dan and Mary Vescarelli, sisters Margaret Vescarelli, Mildred Scarrow, Gladys Christensen, Dorothy Trimmer, brother-in-laws Glen Calvin (Cal) Christensen, Robert (Bud) Trimmer, Harold Scarrow, Lloyd Steinback, son Barry Nelson, and son-in-law Doug Topley.
Surviving is her beloved family, daughter Bev Topley, grandson Dana Topley, granddaughter Lisa Crossett and husband Scott Crossett, and her great granddaughter Taylor Crossett who all reside in Bentonville, Arkansas USA. Sisters Clara Steinback of Whitecourt and Donna (John) Ferguson of Magrath, brother Danny (Coralee) of Calgary, sister-in-law Sally Scarrow of Red Deer and numerous nieces and nephews.
At Ellen’s request, there will be no public service and her ashes will be interned at High River Cemetery.
