Obituary For Royston “Roy” Jones
Roy Jones, resident of Grande Prairie, AB, formerly of Edmonton, AB, passed away on January 2, 2024, at the age of 95 years.
Roy was the first born son of Alfred and Maggie Jones, and was born on November 20, 1928, in Luscar, AB.
Living in the Coal Branch area with his parents, and later two brothers Robert “Bob” and David, was a highlight of Roy’s memories. They remained in that area until his dad was injured in a mine accident, and a move to Edmonton became necessary. The family became an active part of the Riverdale community.
Following school, Roy moved to Calgary to attend Alberta Bible College, where he met and married Sheila Turner. They continued to live, work and minister in Calgary for five years. During this time their family grew, with Brian being born in 1952 and Judith “Judy” following in 1954. In 1955 Roy had the opportunity to transfer with the Post Office from Calgary to Edmonton. He also continued ministering in partnership with First Christian Church, and then the young congregation of King Edward Park. Roy and Sheila’s son Dwight was born in 1959, and daughter Sheena in 1961. By this time they were living in the Southeast area of Edmonton, and remained in that general area for the rest of their time there, with school and community involvement within the Avonmore and Donnan neighbourhoods.
Roy worked with the Post Office for a total of 16 years, and then moved to general Property Insurance sales and management, before taking an early retirement due to his eyesight difficulties.
In their earlier years, Roy and Sheila enjoyed camping trips throughout Alberta, BC, and Saskatchewan with family and friends. He loved the mountains, and exploring them – whether on foot or by car. Many times Roy was heard to say “I wonder where that road goes…” and off he’d go! Travels to the Holy Land and area, Great Britain, Ireland, California, Florida, Alaska, and Tennessee were also major highlights for them.
Troubled throughout his life with severe eye problems caused by “keratoconus”, Roy continued to live his life to the full. Though his eye trouble required him to undergo several cornea transplants, and navigate many difficult circumstances, he did so without complaint. Even when his right eye was permanently damaged due to the optic nerve being injured during one of the transplant surgeries, his response was one of grace and forgiveness. Roy loved his Lord. He enjoyed people and loved serving others in whatever way he was able. He loved his church communities, both local and extended. Roy loved his family, and through the years he was great father to his kids. He later delighted in his grandkids and great grandkids when they came along. He was a consistent source of love, encouragement and generosity. Roy will be remembered dearly for his gentle manner, thoughtful advice, leadership, and his sense of humour.
Roy is survived by his children: Brian (Laura) Jones, Dwight Jones, and Sheena (Alan) Jones; brother Robert (Davina) Jones; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; nieces and nephew.
Roy is preceded in death by his wife Sheila Jones, parents, daughter Judy, and brother David.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff of Prairie Lake Seniors Residence, as well as Dr. Duta and staff for their care during the past number of years.
The family has decided to hold a joint Celebration of Life for Roy and Sheila in Edmonton, AB, in the Spring of 2024.
