Obituary For Robert James Cochrane
March 5, 1948 – September 29, 2023
Robert (Bob) James Cochrane, 75, lifelong resident of Grande Prairie, AB passed away in true farmer fashion on a Harvest Full Moon, Friday, Sept 29 from liver cancer.
Bob was predeceased by his parents James (Jim) Cochrane, Evelyn Gammon (Ford, Cochrane), sister Bonnie Cochrane and son James (Jamie) Cochrane.
He is survived by daughters Tammy Cochrane and Trina (Jim) White, son Scott (Cathy) Olydam, and grandchildren Bailey (Jordy) Cochrane, Michaela (Brandon) Ross, Kassidy (Tyler) Ross, Kelsy Olydam & Kyle (Emma) Olydam, brother Willy (Verna) Cochrane, and sister Betty (Rodger) Miller.
Left to grieve is his longtime companion Audrey Patterson and other friends and family.
Bob was an avid outdoorsman who was happiest when surrounded by nature. Dad shared his passion for fishing, boating, ski-dooing and hunting with many friends over the years. If you went with him on one of his adventures, you would have enjoyed his culinary skills along with his quick-witted sarcasm.
He especially loved cooking buffalo burgers in his cast iron frying pan on an open fire, listening to Leonard Cohen and watching videos from his many trips. Photography was a passion of his, he had countless albums riddled with scenic views and hours of videography documenting his journeys. He was always happy to relive those moments at any opportunity.
He was most proud of bringing buffalo to the virgin prairie at the family farm in the early 80’s, where he raised buffalo for more than 30 years. He then protected the land through the Nature Conservancy so that the land can never be disturbed, and the unique grasslands of the Peace Country will be protected for future generations.
Dad was a strong-minded and independent fellow. He had his own philosophy on life and stuck by it unapologetically.
He enjoyed reading about the history of different places he travelled – having run more than 160 rivers and lakes in Alaska, Yukon, Northwest Territories, BC and Alberta. His book collection was vast and he had an admiration for sharing his knowledge regarding nature with those close to him. “Running new lakes and rivers has been a great thing in my life” Dad wrote.
The family would like to extend their sincerest thanks to all the healthcare professionals on Unit 12, in Grande Prairie Hospice and Dr. Barreth. Because of them, he was able to remain comfortable and safe throughout his last weeks of life.
At Dad’s request there will be no funeral and he has been cremated. A private immediate family gathering to scatter his ashes in the buffalo pasture will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to the Nature Conservancy of Canada if one wishes to do so.
For in travelling, I found some indefinable satisfaction.
Every trail and river are enticing and every new one enchanting.
