Obituary For Mavis Lazoruk
January 13, 1945 – May 21, 2024
It is with heavy hearts we share the loss of our beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Mavis, who departed from this world on May 21,2024, at the age of seventy-nine.
Mavis was born in Melville, Saskatchewan, to Martha and Cecil Thompson, the second oldest of four children. At a young age her family moved to Rycroft so her father could work on the railroad. While living in Rycroft, Mavis met Bill and they continued to date after her family moved to McLennan. Mavis and Bill were married on July 20, 1962, in Rycroft and continued to live and raise a family on their farm.
Mavis was a very active member of the community, devoting many hours of her time to the R&S Figure Skating Club. Whether it was coaching skating, sewing costumes, or decorating for the annual skating carnival, she enjoyed it all. As her children got older, she and Bill spent many hours on the road, travelling to various places for either figure skating or to watch their sons play hockey. Mavis often talked about how much fun she had on hockey bus trips while travelling with the bus to various hockey tournaments. She was truly a dedicated hockey mom.
Mavis also kept busy by working at the local group home for many years and then as a teacher’s aide at the Rycroft school. She also enjoyed going to dances in Rycroft, especially the New Year’s Eve dances and during the Northern Winter Frolic.
Her true passion was for her flower gardens. An avid gardener, with beautiful flowers, I’m sure she planted every flower possible though lilies were her favorite. She expressed her creativity through her exquisite floral arrangements that won her many ribbons at local fairs. She often gifted her friends and family with beautiful bouquets. When she and Bill built their home in the town of Rycroft, she managed to bring a variety of flowers with her where she then created another beautiful yard full of flowers. People would often drive by their home just to admire her lush flower gardens. She tended to her flowers up until her passing.
To our dearest Mom, your time on this earth has ended, but your love and presence will forever be in our hearts. You and Dad are now together again. Until we meet again, you are deeply loved and will be forever missed. May you rest in peace with a garden full of flowers.
