Obituary For Marjorie Parry
Lovingly remembered –
Marjorie Parry, age 96, passed away peacefully in the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital, on Friday, June 28, 2024, our beloved Mother, Mother-in-Law, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother.
Marjorie was born in Stoke-on-Trent, England to Arnold and Bessie Burgess, April 11, 1928. When she was two years old she sailed with her Mom and two brothers to Canada to the Two Rivers area south of Beaverlodge where her Dad had settled. She grew up on the family farm with two older brothers, and three younger sisters. In 1943, she was a supervisor for students at Hermit Lake School. She later attended agricultural College at Olds, Alberta and then returned to Beaverlodge where she met and married Alton Parry in 1950. Their lives were blessed with four children, Bruce, Mavis, Joyce and Lorraine, who were raised in their Lake Saskatoon area home.
Marjorie was a kind, gentle and thoughtful woman. Marjorie loved caring for her family. She was active as a volunteer in the Lake Saskatoon Community Club for many years. She enjoyed visiting friends and neighbors with whom she’d play cards or games or attending community dances. Gardening, cooking delicious meals, canning, baking, knitting, quilting, making crafts and reading were some things that kept her busy day by day. Special times were spent visiting grandchildren and extended family, camping and traveling in Canada and to a number of other countries.
In 2010, Marjorie and Alton moved from their farm to Emerald Gardens in Grande Prairie. Together they began adjusting to their new location and making new friendships. Unfortunately though, Alton passed away just a few months later. They had been married nearly 60 years. Emerald Gardens was a very comfortable home for Marjorie where she enjoyed wonderful friendships and many activities.
Marjorie is lovingly remembered by her children Bruce (Wendy) Parry of Red Deer, Joyce (Dana) MacLean of Sylvan Lake, Lorraine (Steve) White of Beaverlodge, son-in-law Les Durling of St. Albert, 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and two sisters Barbara and Elaine. Sadly, Marjorie’s eldest daughter, Mavis, passed away in 2017. Marjorie’s youngest sister Sheila and brothers Warwick and Maurice also predeceased Marjorie.
Marjorie’s family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Emerald Gardens for their care. They supported her in recent years which allowed her to remain safely in her home of 14 years where she was able to continue enjoying life. The family would like to thank the doctors and staff of unit 12 at the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital for her care during her short stay.
Marjorie will be forever in our hearts as a person who loved us deeply. She shaped our lives, the lives of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren with her love and compassion. She will be missed.
“Those we love don’t go away, they walk beside us every day. Unseen, unheard, but always near. Still loved, still missed and very dear.”
A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, July 4, 2024, 2:00 pm at Oliver’s Funeral Home in Grande Prairie (10005 107 Ave.). Snacks and refreshments to follow after the service. Interment at Lake Saskatoon Cemetery to follow.
Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society AB/NWT Division (200, 325 Manning Road NE, Calgary, AB, T2E 2P5).
