Obituary For Katherine Olley
February 17, 1935 – March 19, 2024
On March 19, 2024, Katherine Olley (nee: Mostowich) died peacefully at the age of 89 at the Grande Prairie Care Centre in Grande Prairie, Alberta. Katherine is survived by her daughters Lois, Lynda (Jen), Heather Stretch (Doug), Trudy Berry (John), seven grandchildren Tylar, Marlee, Carter, Kaylen, Justine, Aidan and Carson, and numerous nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her husband Lloyd, son Clair, brothers Tom and Peter and parents Harry and Nettie.
Katherine was born on February 17, 1935, five years after her Ukrainian-immigrant parents Harry and Nettie obtained a homestead west of Clairmont, Alberta. She first attended Currie School, and went on to attend high school in Grande Prairie, living in the dorms during the school year. After graduation Katherine worked as a bookkeeper at the bicycle shop where American-immigrant and future husband Lloyd became employed. They were married in 1953, settled in Grande Prairie, and had five children from 1954 to 1964. In 1961 mom and dad established Sherwood Bowling Lanes, for which mom also kept the books. They sold the bowling alley in 1978 and retired.
Katherine was a kind, quiet person, and a good listener. She had a wonderful sense of humour, and loved animals and nature. She was dedicated to her family and cherished all her relationships. Katherine enjoyed time spent at the family land, and always had a large vegetable garden. Her home was her sanctuary. She was most happy puttering out in her yard, or indoors cooking, baking, writing letters, visiting on the phone, playing cribbage, etc. Katherine was an information seeker. She especially enjoyed reading articles about farming, nature, business and health matters. She kept up with current affairs and travelled mostly to visit family.
We shall forever miss mom’s smile, her ready laugh and those soft blue eyes.
The family expresses our gratitude for mom’s care to all the staff at the Grande Prairie Care Centre. We also extend our heartfelt appreciation to Stacey who spent many devoted hours loving mom, providing companionship and helping with her care.
Mom did not want a memorial service. Private burial will take place at a later date in the Emerson Trail cemetery.
In lieu of flowers we invite you to donate to the David Suzuki Foundation or to the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital Foundation, or even plant a tree.
