Obituary For Eileen Karen Henderson
*Added Service Information*
March 12, 1955 – February 5, 2024
The family of Eileen Karen Henderson, formerly of Courtenay, BC., are sad to announce her passing at the age of 68. Eileen passed away peacefully at home surrounded by the love of all of her family.
Eileen was born in Edmonton, AB, on March 12, 1955. She came into the lives of Yvonne and Walter Henderson and was joined over the next few years by her siblings, Paul, Julie, and Jeanette. Eileen lived in Banff with her family until 1972, when they relocated to Vancouver Island. The Island would always hold a special place in her heart for the rest of her days. Eileen graduated in 1973 from the College of Notre Dame in Saskatchewan. She found her passion in travel and got her travel agent’s ticket in 1982. In all her travels, she discovered many amazing things, and learned about other cultures and ways of life. However, the most wonderful thing that she found was love. During one of her girls’ nights out in Campbell River, she met Gary Dewling.
Gary was bartending at an elite oceanfront restaurant, and it soon became Eileen’s favourite place to go after a long day’s work. After 18 years together, and waiting for the right time, she and Gary married on June 19 of 1997.
Eileen and Gary lived in Courtney together for many years. Gary had just entered retirement when tragedy struck, and he passed unexpectedly in 2007. Eileen remained in Courtney, guiding many people to their dream travel destinations through Jan’s Travel, Square One, UniGlobe, Sear’s Travel and BCAA. Although her mother Yvonne moved to Alberta in 2014, Eileen remained on Vancouver Island until she made the leap to move closer to her family in 2018. She continued her work as a travel agent with AMA until COVID gave her the opportunity to retire after 30 years. Eileen was blessed to live within a stone’s throw of her family. She spent her retirement visiting with her mother, sisters, and nieces who all lived in Wembley as well.
Left to remember her is her mother Yvonne Henderson, her brother Paul (Susanne Maichen) Henderson, sisters Julie (Gerald) Hexspoor and Jeanette (Dale) Anderson, her nieces Kathryn (Jamie) Coutu, Kimberlea (Ricky) Hexspoor, Karynn (Justin) Pede, Kyley (Will) Henderson, Kristina (Matt) Thompson, and Karleigh (Mitch) Hexspoor, her nephews Stephen, James (Echo) Henderson, Nick Maichen, as well as 8 great nieces and nephews. Eileen will also be remembered by the many other family, friends, and anyone who had the opportunity to spend even a moment with her.
Eileen is welcomed by her Father Walter Henderson and is reunited with her husband Gary Dewling in Heaven.
A Viewing and Celebration of Life was held on February 9, 2024, at 2:00 pm and 3:00 pm respectively. It was held at Bear Creek Funeral Home, 11802 99 Ave, Grande Prairie, AB., T8W 0C7.
A Celebration of Life for her friends and family on Vancouver Island will be held on June 8, 2024, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm at Black Creek Hall Pavilion, Vancouver Island, BC.
Eileen was a fabulous woman who loved to “Dress to Impress”, and we invite you to do the same (keep the black to a minimum!)
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in honour of Eileen to the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada, or the Bandaged Paws Animal Rescue Association.
