Obituary For Dorothy Rosemary Muir
September 11, 1927 – March 9, 2024
In the early hours of March 9th, 2024, Dorothy Rosemary Muir passed away with her family by her side. Dorothy had prepared for this day for some time. She left this world without fear or regret at the age of 96 years.
Dorothy was born in Nanton, Alberta on September 11th, 1927, the fourth child of Jim and Madeline Ryan. She married Bert Muir on August 16th, 1947 at the age of twenty and they were married for 66 years until Bert’s passing in 2013.
Growing up in the Foothills of Alberta on a small ranch, times were hard and at the age of 17, she began a teaching career at a small rural school near Rocky Mountain House. She faced many difficulties as a teenage schoolteacher, but always rose to the challenge.
Dorothy and Bert farmed near Nanton, Alberta with their family of four children until 1965 when they sold the farm and moved to Grande Prairie. Here she continued her career as a teacher until retiring in the 1980’s.
Faith was an integral part of her life and showed in her love for her family and friends. Mom also loved music and was an accomplished fiddle player, competing at several local fiddling contests. For several years she played in a band called Wild Rose Country.
Together, she and husband Bert enjoyed hosting family and friends at their acreage in Grande Prairie. Over the years, many people enjoyed their hospitality at birthdays, weddings, anniversaries and other special occasions.
Dorothy opened her home and her heart to everyone. She was a friend, a counsellor and an advocate to anyone who reached out for help. And there were many over the years.
Moving from the family home to the Wild Rose Manor after her husband Bert’s passing in 2013, she continued to cultivate new friendships with the other Wild Rose residents. She also enjoyed playing her fiddle at some of the manor’s social events.
Dorothy is survived by her sister Mert Sandy, daughter Kendra (George) and son Bruce (Anne), grandchildren Riley (Kristen), Kelly (Mike), Kyla (Mike), Lindsay (Shawn) and Corri, great grandchildren Brett, Brooke, Connor, Cadence, Leo, Georgia, Violet and Hugh as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Dorothy was predeceased by her husband Bert, her parents Jim and Madeline Ryan, siblings Bill Ryan, Pat Ewashen, Doreen Hopkins and Kate Young, son Larry Muir, daughter Linda Edlund, grandchildren Chris Muir and Brady Fournier as well as many other loving and special brother and sister in laws, special family members and friends.
A celebration of Dorothy’s life will be held on Saturday, April 6th, 2024 at 1pm at Bear Creek Funeral Home (11802 99 Avenue in Grande Prairie, Alberta). Lorraine Raiwet will be officiating, and a luncheon will be served following Dorothy’s service.
