Obituary For Doris Derkach
Doris Derkach, resident of Grande Prairie, formerly of Saskatoon, SK, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 2, 2024, surrounded by her close friends and family at the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital at the age of 90 years.
Doris was born on January 25, 1934, in Insinger, SK to George and Annie Pobereznek. She was one of eight children and was born and raised on the Pobereznek family farm. In her younger years she moved to Saskatoon and worked at the McQuarrie Tea and Coffee Merchant.
She met her future husband, who worked as a teacher in the Sheho, SK area. They later married in 1962 and remained together for 17 years. They resided in northern Saskatchewan following the teaching postings and subsequently in Saskatoon, SK and Regina, SK. Doris had two children: Tracey and Trevor.
In 2005, Doris moved to Grande Prairie, AB, to be closer to her son and grandchildren. Over the years, she taught many people her craft of crochet and knitting. She also loved to share her tips and tricks for making dill pickles, borscht, and perogies. There was always an abundant supply of care packages filled with her love, and her tasty Ukrainian cooking and baking.
She will be sadly missed by her son Trevor Derkach (Adele Tait) and his family: grandson Cody Derkach (Shalene Derkach) and great granddaughters Lily and Aubrey Derkach, granddaughter Brittany Derkach (fiancé Zach Cramer); brother Albert (Loretta); sisters Elaine and Bernice; as well as numerous nieces/nephews, and friends.
She was predeceased by her daughter Tracey, parents George and Annie Pobereznek, siblings Harry, John, Rose, and Iris.
A special thank you to Dr. Sereda who supported Doris and the family with compassionate care and understanding.
Doris will be interned back home in Saskatoon, SK. A Celebration of Life will be held at that time. Date to be announced.
Rest in peace our dear mother, Baba, great Baba, sister, and friend.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society (cancer.ca/en/) or the Canadian Lung Association (www.lung.ca/).
