Obituary For David Lloyd Buie
April 28, 1956 – June 22, 2024
David Lloyd Buie passed away on June 22, 2024, in Grande Prairie, Alberta. He was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario on April 28, 1956. He grew up there, moving in his teens between Little Current, Ontario on Manitoulin Island and the Soo when. After high school, he worked a variety of jobs before starting at Algoma Steel where he began his electrical apprenticeship and met his future wife, Susan Olmstead. They married in DeTour Village, Michigan in the summer of 1979.
Dave took his new skills as an apprentice and headed west in a tricked-out van named the “Shady Lady” to Kamsack, Saskatchewan working in construction. He then moved to Camrose, Alberta with his wife Susan. After the birth of his two sons and completion of his apprenticeship he moved the family to Slave Lake, Alberta, where he worked for Weldwood at their OSB mill. His time there was a highlight in his life, and he treasured his memories of that time of hunting the local area and fishing on the local lakes and colleagues from those days became life-long friends. The early 90s saw Dave heading further west to Houston, British Columbia, where he advanced his career. He made many friends in his time in British Columbia and his love for golf became one of his most beloved pastimes. He later moved back to Alberta to work for Tolko High Prairie; he found new friends and old, began regular attendance at “Choir Practice” and helped when he could. He retired in 2019, doing odd jobs as an electrician at the local golf course and for his friends in the area.
Dave was a hard-working, kind, and honest man known for a stubborn streak and a slight mischievous side that would come out of nowhere. Dave was passionate about hunting, fishing, and playing golf. He was a long-time member of the Royal Canadian Legion being an executive for the Houston Branch for many years. He had much respect and admiration for the men who came before him and some of his closest golf buddies were the men who paved the way.
Dave was predeceased by his father, Rex Buie, his mother, Grace Buie, and his brother, Bob. Dave will be missed by his sons, Emory and Wesley, his granddaughter, Kinora, his brother, Brien (Nancy), nephews Matthew, Joey and Michael, nieces Kari (Paul) and Cathy (Jason), as well as his many close friends.
A celebration of life will likely take place later this summer.
