Obituary For Darlene Kaye Repka-Smith
February 25, 1952 – July 8, 2024
Darlene Repka-Smith, a longtime resident of Grande Prairie, Alberta, passed away after a short second bout with cancer on July 8, 2024.
Born on February 25, 1952, to George and Katie Repka, in Edmonton, Alberta, Darlene lived a life filled with passion, humour and generosity. She had an unwavering commitment to her loved ones, the community of Grande Prairie, real estate and sports.
Darlene’s hard work ethic began with the Drive in Theatre in 1953. Alongside her parents and brothers, they ran the Drive-In theatre in Grande Prairie. This was a passion of hers, along with the pool. She loved working and managing the swimming pool, and this love of swimming continued throughout her life. Once she graduated university, she became a teacher, and taught in Grande Prairie from 1975-1980, before opening the Health Hut. She had various entrepreneur ventures, before settling on real estate, which was her passion for 25 years. Her dedication earned her multiple awards and the admiration ion her clients and colleagues at Grassroots realty group, where she also served as a mentor and teacher.
Beyond her professional achievements, Darlene was a pillar of her community, volunteering on over 35 boards throughout her lifetime, happily and lovingly donating 1000’s of hours of her time. Her selflessness and dedication to giving back touched the lives of many, reflecting her generous spirit and compassion.
Darlene’s resilience and positivity were unwavering, even in the face of challenges. She was known for her sharp wit, intelligence, generosity and ability to find joy in every moment. To know Darlene was a privilege—she was one-of-a-kind; her unique personality and ability to bring laughter to any situation left an indelible mark on all who knew her. She could make genuine and meaningful conversation with anyone, an art she mastered at a young age and continued through until her passing.
Darlene is survived by her partner Jim, her children Katelin (Justin) and Yuri (Sukhu), grandchildren Grady, Rylan, Kelby, Crew, Maksym and Millie, brothers Randy and Don, and nieces and nephews: Katrina, Melina, Yvan, Eilee, Derek, Paul, and Leslie. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Katie, and her brothers, George, Leslie, Roger, and Dale.
In accordance with Darlene’s wishes, her family, friends and colleagues are encouraged to celebrate her life, laugh often, and share stories in her honour, through this difficult time. Darlene reminded us often that she lived a great life, filled with many laughs, great friendships the love of her family, and no regrets. In place of flowers, donations may be made to the Ronald McDonald House Charities Canada.
A Celebration of Darlene’s Life will be held July 27th, 11:00 am at the Tara Centre at Evergreen Park, near Grande Prairie, where stories of her adventures, laughter, and compassionate spirit will be shared amongst family and friends.
