Obituary For Dale William Stoker
October 17, 1939 – February 4, 2024
Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather Dale William Stoker passed away in Grande Prairie Regional Hospital on Feb. 4, 2024 at the age of 84. Dale was born Oct. 17, 1939 in Tisdale, Sask. to Henrietta and William Stoker. He grew up in Crooked River, Sask., and often shared memories of swimming in the creek, playing pond hockey, baseball and other sports with his friends and siblings, Gary, Myrna and Billy.
In 1956 at the age of 17, and with his mother’s permission, Dale joined the Royal Canadian Navy. He completed basic training at HMCS Cornwallis, NS and HMCS Gloucester, Ontario. Dale served across Canada during his military career including a
posting in Esquimalt, BC where he served on the HMCS Skenna, a destroyer. He also had postings to Churchill, MB, Coverdale, NB, Gander, NFLD, and Leitrim, ON. Dale was stationed to Alert on Ellesmere Island, the northern most island in the Canadian Arctic. A high-lite for Dale was serving on a two-year exchange program in the United States Navy at a base near Miami, Florida. After serving 24 years in the Navy and reaching the rank of Master Warrant Officer, he joined the RCMP, and served with them for 15 years.
In 1960, Dale met and then married the love of his life, Loretta. Together they raised three wonderful children, Tammy, Dan, and Kim. To Dale and Loretta family meant everything. They were very involved as parents in their children’s activities and were always supportive. On February 5, Dale and Loretta would have celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary.
Dale loved life. He had a great sense of humour, loved to dance, and was an outstanding athlete. He excelled in hockey, boxing, and baseball, playing in the Senior games in Utah at the age of 72. Dale was also passionate about curling and even achieved an eight ender, a very rare event. Another favourite pass time was golf. He continued to enjoy these activities in his later years until ravaged by Alzheimer disease.
Over the course of his life, he made lasting friendships and always enjoyed a good party. His legacy of love and compassion for animals continues through his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife Loretta, his children Tammy (Rudy), Dan, Kim (Don), his sister Myrna, sister in laws Betty, Linda, Marlene, Bertha and brother in laws Ron and Gary. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Kailyn, Lyndie, Spenser, Quinn, and his great grandson Denver. We will miss him dearly but are relieved his suffering from this horrible disease is over.
We would like to thank Dr. Anez, Dr. Lawal, the Emergency and Unit 23 staff at Grande Prairie Regional Hospital for dad’s care.
