Obituary For Currie Ross Wood
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Currie Ross Wood of Clairmont, Alberta (formerly of Derwent, Alberta). He passed away at the age of 84 on Sunday December 17, 2023.
Currie, the youngest of 17 children, was born in Regina, Saskatchewan to Frank and Ruth Wood. As a child he moved with his parents and siblings to the U.S. Hereford Ranch located near Donalda, Alberta. At the ranch he worked hard and fell in love with farming.
As a young adult he spent some time as a hired hand, working for the weather office in Fort Smith, NWT and Watson Lake, Yukon. He then completed his welding apprenticeship and worked as a welder in Edmonton, AB and Sparwood, BC. Deep in his heart he longed to be farming.
In 1974, he purchased a farm near Derwent, Alberta. While on the farm he started his own welding business and spent many years welding in the oilpatch around Elk Point, Alberta. His true love was farming and he returned to farming while still doing some welding for local farmers. He also enjoyed working with wood and spent many an hour working on his latest project.
Family was important to Currie, starting in 1978, the farm was the location for many Wood Family Reunions. The yard was filled with tents and campers as many of the “Wood Pile” came to visit and catch up on the August long weekend. He was known as Uncle Currie to many generations of the Wood family. On reunion weekends there was many cups of coffee, and treats to be found along with wagon rides, bonfires, and aggravation games., He never had to worry about what he was going to eat on reunion weekends as he was welcomed at each and every campsite and there was always enough for Uncle Currie to join at mealtime.
Currie sold the home quarter and moved to Clairmont, Alberta in 2019 to be closer to his daughters. He found a home with a large garage that allowed him to continue to putter in the shop doing some wood working. Although he enjoyed being closer to his daughters, part of his heart remained at the farm.
He is survived by his daughters: Jennifer Wood and Myra Wood Piercey (Sheldon), grandson Caden, granddaughter Toni, great grandson Skyler. He is also survived by siblings: Peggy Thorsness, Ralph Wood (Margaret) and Mary Lou McCreadie as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
