It is with deep sadness that the family of Richard Stanley Turner announce his peaceful passing at the Northern Lights Regional Health Centre, at the age of 72 years.
Richard was born in Edmonton, Alberta, on October 7, 1951. In 1969 he met his future wife, Theresa. They married in 1970, and initially settled in Edmonton. In 1972, their family moved to Vernon, B.C., where he worked at Consumers Glass. In 1977, Richard moved his family to Houston, B.C., where he became a millwright at Equity Silver Mines.
In 1986, Richard moved the family to the small town of Faro, Yukon, where he worked at Curragh Resources. While in the Yukon, he had a placer mine in Chicken, Alaska, and one in Mayo, Yukon. Richard really seemed to find himself in the Yukon and was in his glory living there. The pace of life, the hunting and fishing, the people, and the town of Faro held a special place in his heart. It is truly God’s country. He would often talk about Faro and the Yukon anytime you sat with him and had a Tim Horton’s coffee, which was frequent. Richard and Theresa opened up a gift shop called Klondike Dreams in Faro. Many trips to Whitehorse followed to bring supplies to the small town.
In 2006, Richard and Theresa moved to Fort McMurray, Alberta, to be closer to family. He got a job with Shell Albian, where he worked up until his heart attack and stroke in 2014.
After the Fort McMurray wildfire in 2016, Richard and Theresa moved temporarily to Edmonton, but soon came back to Fort McMurray where Richard ended up living at the Willow Square Continuing Care Facility.
Richard loved playing the stock market, and poker whether at the local casino, or in Las Vegas.
He leaves to mourn his wife of 54 years, Theresa; his son, Richard William (Julie); and grandchildren: Rebecca Archibald (Michael), Megan and Robert; his daughter, Christina and grandchildren: Cody, Jerrid and Sidney; sister, Dodie (Ray) and numerous great grandchildren, nephews and nieces.
He is predeceased by his parents Robert and Bernadette; siblings: Joseph, Robert, Donna and Aubrey.
To the special nurses who took care of him, both at Willow Square and the Northern Lights Regional Health Centre, as well as the palliative care team (Jackie and Dinah) we are forever grateful for your compassion and kindness you gave to Richard and to us. Whenever you eat a peanut butter cup or a Werther’s candy I am sure you will think of him.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society, or the Heart and Stroke Foundation in his honour.
