Shanley’s Obituary
Shanley Rae Burke Sawchuk, resident of Fairview, Alberta passed away on June 12th, 2024 while at the University Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta at the age of 75. She was born in Galahad Alberta on Dec 23th, 1948, to Ray (Raymond) and Jo (Josephine) Burke. Shanley met Sam Sawchuk in Galahad and they were married on December 27th, 1965. Shortly after that, they moved to Olds, Alberta until relocating to Fairview, Alberta in the spring of 1966 where they continue to reside.
While raising her family, she worked at Boyts Department Store, Fairview Dental, and sewing and providing custom alterations clothing for the community, Ken’s Mens Wear and Friedel’s Mens Wear. As a mom of five, Shanley later returned to school, completing her Dental Assistant Diploma at NAIT. After that, she worked with the residents at the Harvest Lodge until she retired due to health concerns.
Shanley was predeceased by her parents, Ray and Jo Burke; her brother who passed at birth; Mother and Father-in-Laws, Leonty and Nedia Sawchuk; Brother & Sister-in-Laws, Steve & Mary Sawchuk, Mary & Walter Kushuba, Tom Langmuir, Nina & Don Kilpatrick, Zenia & Mike Kowalchuk, Roger Sawchuk and John Sawchuk.
She was a beloved wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great grandmother, godmother, neighbor and friend. Shanley enjoyed playing cards, gardening, baking, and reading. She was an extremely accomplished seamstress, and was known for her sewing and homemade crafts. Shanley belonged to the Piece Friends Quilt Guild, Fairview Fine Arts Center, and Catholic Women’s League (CWL), a faithful member of the congregation, and participated in choir. Shanley was also passionate in researching all her family’s genealogies across the world. This also drove her love for travel, especially to see her family across Canada, the USA, Ireland and Norway.
Shanley is survived by her loving husband, Sam Sawchuk of 58 years; sister-in-laws Anita Langmuir and Diane Sawchuk; Cousin Beverly Dunlop; Children, Shannon Satre, Aaron Sawchuk (Kim), Lyndon Sawchuk (Erin), Kara Boulton (Byron) and Amanda Sawchuk; Grandchildren, Jacie, Kayla, Parker, Damon, Hayden, Rayne, McKenzie, Taylor, Seth Camryn, Rayder, Kruze and Slade; Great Grandchildren, Jayden, Jude and several nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren and other loved ones.
Funeral Services for the late Shanley Sawchuk will be held on Saturday June 29th at 1pm at the Catholic Church in Fairview, Alberta with Father Isidore to officiate. Interment will follow at the Highland Park Cemetery, Luncheon and Memorial Video to follow back at the church. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Chapel of Memories Funeral Homes.
Donations can be made in lieu of flowers to the Fairview Fine Arts Society in memory of Shanley Sawchuk specifically for building the Elevator to make the center more accessible.
