Beverley’s Obituary
Beverley Ann Peterson passed away suddenly and unexpectedly in Edmonton on Sunday, May 19, 2024.
She came into the world February 7, 1939, eighty-five years ago in Saskatoon—a big bustling metropolis compared to her true home town of Naicam. Naicam was a going concern in its own right in those decades, however, suffused as it was with the hard-working small-town optimism that characterized the rural west at the time.
Bev’s parents Winnifred and Frank Ponath, were successful and civil people. They had four children, each five years apart: Earl, Joan, Beverley and the youngest, Margaret, with whom Bev was as thick as thieves. Born in a fortunate time and place and with a temperament to match, Bev had only good things to remember and say about her home town, province, parents and siblings.
She met her husband Walter when he was in Grade Three. She occupied the grade below, but they were in the same small town classroom. Walter knew he loved her right away. That was an easy thing to do, however, in the case of Bev. A sunnier and more agreeable person could hardly be imagined. They started going out in the year of Bev’s graduation, and were married in March of 1960 in Saskatoon. In June of 1962, they had their first child, Jordan. He was followed by Bonnie, in December of 1963, and by Joel in August of 1966. Bonnie and her husband Jim Keller have two children, Kathryn (19) and Natalie (18), as do Jordan and his wife Tammy—Mikhaila (31) and Julian (30). Joel married Kathleen (nee Richardson) in 2000.
All four grandchildren had the great privilege of getting to know grandma and grandpa well, as their cabins at Little Bear Lake north of Prince Albert in Saskatchewan were the preferred gathering place for the extended family, which included Margaret, her husband Carl, and their children Kari and Bob for more than three decades.
Bev trained as a nurse, although she did not practice long, except insofar as her education prepared her to be the excellent mother that she was, kind, funny, patient—but also with a spine. Bev was no pushover, despite her markedly pleasant and hospitable temperament. She managed several careers—and very reliably and professionally—in addition to her family life, rising to the position of head librarian at Fairview College in its glory days during the late seventies and through the eighties. She also worked extensively with Walter at the Dunvegan Market Gardens with Ron and Pauline Friesen and at Yellowknife after her retirement. She was a loyal and longstanding member of the United Church, working there for CGIT and singing, as she loved to, in the choir. She was an avid volunteer in Fairview, working at the food bank, for Meals on
Wheels and in the extended care facility. She also participated in the Terry Fox Run every year since it began and was often the star fund raiser.
Beverley was an adventurous person, as well, and saw far more of the world than she had ever thought possible, journeying to Africa, Iceland, New Zealand, and Australia, as well as throughout Western Canada and the Northwestern US on the long vacations afforded by Walter’s career as a teacher when their children were at home. She loved to host people as well; to make her home and garden and to celebrate family occasions at Christmas and in the summer. She always dressed the part colorfully and made the best cinnamon buns, bread and cherry pie. Bev brought to her travels and her home the overflowing gratitude and good nature that characterized everything she did and that was a major but certainly not sole part of her attractiveness and popularity.
She will be sorely missed by her large contingent of staunch friends in Fairview and elsewhere. They are in shock, as is her family: Beverley was fully engaged in life until the very last and no one saw this coming. She was a lovely person. Her loss leaves us all bereft but with the most positive of memories and grateful for the fact of her life and example.
In lieu of flowers a donation to Fairview’s food bank or the Terry Fox Foundation in Beverley’s name would be appreciated.
