The family of the late Verna Christine Attwood regret to announce her passing in the early hours of November 26, 2024.
She was born on 3 July 1936 in Glace Bay NS and was predeceased by her parents John and Emma Summerell and younger brother Lawrence.
She leaves behind her high school sweetheart and husband of 68 years, Charles (Charlie), son Chuck (Marcy), daughter Betsy Fletcher (Tom), and son Tom (Mark). Mum cherished her four grandchildren, Scott, Rachel, Rebecca and Meghan and their families. She also leaves behind brother John and sisters Elizabeth, Kathy and Margie and families. Mum had cousins, nieces, nephews and friends too numerous to count.
In the mid 1950’s Mum and Dad left their hometowns of Dominion and Bridgeport in Cape Breton for all the adventures Dad’s service in the Air Force could bring them. They enjoyed postings to Chatham NB, Grostenquin France, Greenwood NS and Cold Lake AB before settling in St Albert in 1980.
Their faith was an elemental part of their identity and have been integral members of Holy Family Parish in St Albert for the past 44 years.
Mum’s interests were widely varied and included many different types of traditional crafting, gardening, baking and travel. She enjoyed escaping to the mountain parks whenever able and visited Jamaica several times to escape the Alberta winters and made numerous trips to visit her children who were scattered from coast to coast. After Dad’s retirement, they took annual trips back to Cape Breton, packing their car to the rafters. Mum’s interest in seeing something new meant the trips back and forth were long and never via the most direct route. A very important highlight of her wanderings was a trip to the Holy Land with many friends from the church.
Mum was a beautiful woman in every respect. She has left a lasting impression of kindness and gentleness on all who know her and she became particularly tender in her last months. She was completely devoted to her husband and her children, continually putting their welfare ahead of hers. She raised her children with a firm hand, but always with a guiding nature, and we all benefitted well from her loving intentions.
With her recent suffering now behind her we know she is in the arms of her loving Saviour, free to jump, dance and sing in all the glory that Jesus holds for her.
Bye Mum, we will always love you.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:30am on Thursday, December 5, 2024 in Holy Family Catholic Parish. Cremation to follow.
