We are saddened to announce the death of Stuart Mackay at the young age of 71, on August 28, 2024, following several years of ill health. He was predeceased by his sisters, Patricia Mackay (2023), Barbara Runij (2023), and Diane Johnson (2021); and parents, Mary Mackay (2000) and Douglas Mackay (1993).
Stuart was proud to be the third generation Mackay born in Edmonton. He completed an undergraduate degree in German Literature, and a Master of Library and Information Studies at the University of Alberta. Stuart also completed French immersion at the University of Laval in Quebec. He had a gift for languages and spoke French, German, and Russian. His love of information and books was translated into a career in libraries. During that time, he also taught at the U of A.
In June 1982, Stuart married Judy, and they were dedicated to one another throughout the ups and downs of life. Stuart was a very kind and principled man with a wicked sense of humour. He loved all animals, but he really loved our old English sheep dogs, Charlie and Tyler, and most recently our rescue greyhound, Bernie.
Stuart described himself as “an information professional” and he was passionate about history and genealogy. He completed the genealogy of our own families and gladly completed genealogical research for many other families.
Stuart loved hockey and played with the U of A Alumni team the Baad Boys for many years. He enjoyed recreational skating and was able to do so until early this summer. Many thanks to his good friend, Marco, who took him skating every week.
Stuart will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 42 years, Judy; brothers-in-law, Brent Haskell (Georgetown, Kentucky), and Elwood Johnson (Edmonton); and nephews, Mark Malinowski (Edmonton), Graham Johnson (Edmonton), Brent Johnson (Vancouver, BC), and Sandro and Tonci Runij (Split, Croatia); nieces, Melanie Johnson Jagiello (Victoria, BC), Andrea Malinowski, and their respective families.
Special thanks to Stuart’s caregivers; Abby Metz and Karen Lee and the Unit 52 staff at the Royal Alexandra Hospital.
There will not be a funeral or memorial service, rather we will honour Stuart at a small family gathering. In lieu of flowers, if you wish, donations can be made to the Edmonton Humane Society.
