Sheila Hilda Pamela Wriothesley Allan was born in Victoria, BC, to Hugh Reginald and Kathleen Dorothy Allan (nee Woods). A big name for a little girl. She passed away peacefully on Monday, May 27, 2024, just 7 weeks shy of her 100th birthday. Her dry sense of humor, infectious smile, and “the look” will be fondly remembered by her family and friends.
Pam developed a life-long love of learning during her formative years at St. Margaret’s School in Victoria. This was followed by nurses training at the Royal Jubilee Hospital, Victoria; Postgraduate studies at the Montreal Neurological Institute; a Diploma in Nursing Service at the University of Saskatchewan; a Bachelor of Nursing degree at McGill University; and a Master’s Degree in Public Health from the University of Minnesota.
She spent most of her 40-year nursing career in Edmonton at the University Hospital. She had various positions and retired as the V.P. of Nursing in 1988.
Pam travelled extensively around the world, from Iceland to the southern tip of South America. One of her favorite places to explore was Northern Canada. Through her travels, she became an avid photographer and took hundreds of pictures and slides. Her subjects included facial expressions, mother nature, family gatherings, and historical events. She meticulously arranged them in albums or slideshows to share her exciting adventures with others.
Pam had a passion for all aspects of language. She read extensively and enjoyed writing short stories and poems. Her friends and family were always the recipients of her many cards, poems, letters, and previously-read books.
She was a dedicated volunteer at the Royal Albert Museum, L’Arche, and All Saints Cathedral, Ronald MacDonald House in Edmonton, Allen Gray Continuing Care Centre, and supported a variety of causes that helped those in her community and around the world.
Pam is survived by nieces, Sheila Cullen (Bob), Susan Perkins (Bert), and Rene Engel (Rich), and niece-in-law, Marta Kazymyra Allan; along with many great and great-great-nieces and nephews. Pam was predeceased by her parents; her brother, Michael Allan (Vivian); and her nephew, David.
Special thanks to Brenda, Olga, Nola, Tannis, Tom, and the many others who made her feel loved to the end. Thanks to Canterbury Manor and the exceptional staff at Norwood Hospice who helped all of us on this journey.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 13, 2024, at All Saints Anglican Cathedral (10035 103 St NW, Edmonton, Alberta).
In lieu of flowers, and in keeping with Pam’s generosity, please consider donating to a charity of your choice.
Arrangements entrusted to Connelly-McKinley Downtown Chapel.
