It is with deep sadness that we announce Neil’s passing at the age of 72, following a brief illness, at the University of Alberta Hospital.
Family was always the center of Neil’s life. As a beloved brother and uncle, he leaves behind his brothers, Greg (Judy) and Frank; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother, Kathleen; his father, Allan; his sister, Brenda; and his brother, Robert (Sandra).
Neil was born and raised in Edmonton. Artistic from the start, he was a talented sketch artist and photographer. Always an excellent student, he won an award for having one of the highest high school grade averages in Alberta. He graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in History followed by a second Bachelor’s degree in Education. He then embarked on his lifelong career as a teacher, first briefly in Cessford, Alberta and then in Jasper, Alberta, where he taught at Jasper Junior/Senior High School until his retirement.
Neil was always very giving of his time to the school’s students, and he devoted many of his evenings and weekends to coaching the school badminton and volleyball teams. Neil also loved to travel, and one of his favourite roles as a teacher was as a chaperone of students on the school’s trips to Europe. Upon retirement, Neil returned to his passion for history and pursued a Master of Arts degree focusing on 20th-century South African history.
Neil loved the outdoors and especially his beloved Jasper. Nothing gave him more joy than hiking, skiing, cycling and occasionally participating in the annual Banff-Jasper relay. He loved music of all kinds and had an extensive collection of recordings. He was also an enthusiastic member of the Jasper Catholic Church choir during his years there.
Special thanks to the caring medical team at the University of Alberta Hospital. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Donations to the University Hospital Foundation are gratefully appreciated.
