It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of John Hugh Hamilton (Father Jack) on Friday, November 22nd, 2024, at the age of 87 years.
He will be lovingly remembered by his brother, Myles (Daphne D); his sister, Maureen (Chuck) Collins; and nephews and nieces, Peter, Gerard, Daniel, Mary Cathryn, Nancy, Judy, Bryan, and Julie. He will also be dearly missed by friends at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, Good Shepherd Church, and the Catholic Pastoral Centre.
He was predeceased by his parents, Lance and Monica (nee Myles) Hamilton; and his brother, Kenneth (Katherine D) Hamilton. Father Jack was ordained in 1962, served at St. Andrew and St. Joseph’s Basilica, and then became a junior high school teacher and consultant for Edmonton Catholic Schools.
In 1978, he was appointed both pastor of then-new Good Shepherd Parish and Chancellor of the Archdiocese. He went on to serve as pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in Red Deer, St. Matthew in Edmonton, and then Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Sherwood Park, where he served until his retirement. Father Jack was beloved – not just at the Parishes in which he served, but also by his extended family and friends across the globe.
He was well-travelled, having visited Jerusalem, Egypt, China, and England, Ireland, and Scotland. He also took trips with family and friends to Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Las Vegas, California, Florida, and Hawaii.
Vigil Prayers will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 28, 2024, and the Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 29, 2024, with Archbishop Richard Smith as Presider. All services will be at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 13 Brower Drive, Sherwood Park. Interment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery, 14611 Mark Messier Trail, Edmonton, AB.
