It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Martin Ivan Nelson on December 7, 2024, at the age of 89. He was surrounded by his loving family during his final days.
Martin was born in Secretan, Saskatchewan, to Norwegian immigrant parents. He was one of eight siblings and was known for constantly getting into mischief during his younger years.
Martin later moved to Edmonton, where he met and married his beautiful and loving wife, Lorraine, on June 28, 1958. In 1961, Martin and Lorraine settled into a bungalow in St. Albert, where they raised their five children. After Lorraine’s passing, Martin continued to live in the same home with his granddaughter Genevieve, who remained his steady sidekick and devoted care provider until his final days.
In 1964, Martin founded L & M Ditching Ltd., a highly successful business that continues to thrive today. Martin was a dedicated businessman who took immense pride in his company, yet always prioritized spending time with his family. Well into his 80s, Martin remained active in the business, enjoying daily visits to the shop, working on blueprints, playing with the cat, building Lego, pulling practical jokes, and going for truck rides to scout out potential projects.
Martin will be remembered as a positive, kind, humble, and humorous man. His greatest joy in life came from spending time with his family and friends. He cherished family barbecues, playing cards, solving puzzles, building intricate Lego sets, and attending Saturday morning breakfasts with his close friends. He also had a deep and genuine love for animals.
Martin touched the lives of many and will be forever missed. He is lovingly remembered by his five children: Richard (Diana) Nelson, Kathryn (Gary) Sumner, James (Zoeanne) Nelson, Douglas Nelson, and Gary Nelson; his grandchildren: Taylor Nelson, Jesse (Cassie) Postma, Danielle (Braden) Postma, Amanda Postma, Genevieve (Greg) Sumner, Danielle (Dallas) Hittinger, Shayle (Denys) Nelson, Brooklynn (Riley) Nelson, Alysha Campbell, Jenna Campbell, Darien Campbell, Chrystal (Jeremy) Payne, Megan (Russell) St. Germaine, and Bella Nelson; his great-grandchildren: Mya Postma, Ava Postma, Ethan Postma, Liam Hittinger, Madelynn Campbell, Madison Payne, Hayden Payne, Oliver St. Germaine, and Brianna St. Germaine; and many cherished friends.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at the Sturgeon Hospital and Homecare for their remarkable care and compassion during
Martin’s final days.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 21, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. at St. Albert Parish Catholic Church, 7 St. Vital Ave, St. Albert. Following the service, an interment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery, 14611 Mark Messier Trail, Edmonton.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the University Hospital Foundation.
Martin’s legacy of love, laughter, and kindness will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Arrangements entrusted to Connelly-McKinley St. Albert Funeral Home.
