Maria Hozjan
November 4, 1936 – October 15, 2024
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our cherished Maria on October 15, 2024, at the age of 87. Born in Trnje, Slovenia, she took a courageous step to start a new life in Canada with her beloved husband, Ivan. Together, they shared a loving marriage for 59 years until his passing in 2016.
Maria’s greatest joy was her family, which she nurtured with love and dedication. She is survived by her four children: Ivan Jr., Dale, Tom (Cindy), and Susan, along with her ten treasured grandchildren: Megan, Jerry, Dale Jr., Terry, Devon (Becca), Kaytlyn (Nima), Karlli (Adrien), Anton (Charlotte), Nicolo (Teresa), and Silvio. Her legacy continues with eleven great-grandchildren: Ryker, Jaxon, Antonio, Mikaela, Olivia, Leila, Kaia, Ethan, Giovanni, Archie, and Sophie. Each of them carries a piece of her heart. She also leaves behind her siblings, Agata, Matilda (Joe), and Ignac, as well as many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends who were fortunate to know her throughout Alberta, Ontario, and Slovenia.
Maria was predeceased by her siblings, Treza and Josef and her parents, Agata and Stefan.
Maria was the foundation of our family, instilling values of hard work, love, and resilience. Her passion for cooking and baking brought everyone together, and she cherished every moment spent at family gatherings and events at the Slovenian hall.
As we remember Maria, we celebrate her remarkable life, the lessons she taught us, and the love she shared so freely. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered in our hearts.
A Prayer Service will be held Wednesday, October 23, 2024, at 7 p.m. at St. Matthew Roman Catholic Church, 13131 – 86 Street NW, Edmonton. A Funeral Mass will be held Thursday, October 24, 2024, at 10 a.m. at St. Matthew Roman Catholic Church. Interment will take place in St. Michael’s Cemetery, with reception to follow at Slovenian Canadian Association Hall, 16703 – 66 Street NW, Edmonton.
