With hearts full of gratitude and sorrow, we announce the passing of Margaret Ann Lee Yuen (née Pon), a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, aunt, nurse, and friend, who passed away peacefully on December 16th at the age of 93. Her life was a testament to resilience, hard work, and personal strength that inspired all who knew her.
Born in Edgerton, Alberta, to a bustling family of nine children to parents Guey Tin and May Toy Pon, Margaret’s early years were shaped by the warmth and challenges of prairie life.
She shared a particularly special bond with her sisters, Vera, Helen, and Jenny, whose laughter and mischief filled her childhood home. Family ties were complicated but unshakable, and Margaret carried the lessons of loyalty and understanding throughout her life.
From a young age, Margaret dreamed of helping others—a dream that led her to a long and distinguished career in nursing. At just 19, she faced her first challenge, stepping into the daunting world of psychiatric care. Her compassion and determination guided her as she worked tirelessly to bring comfort to those in need. Even illness could not keep Margaret from her calling; she overcame tuberculosis and pleurisy with the same perseverance that defined every aspect of her life.
Margaret’s dedication to nursing stretched across decades, from psychiatric hospitals to emergency rooms and maternity wards. Known for her thoughtful care, she often went above and beyond, offering back rubs and tea during her shifts. Her belief was simple: “You treat people with kindness—that’s what nursing is about.”
In her early 30s, Margaret met Richard, a kind and persistent man who became her partner in life until his passing. Together, they built a home filled with love, laughter, and purpose. Margaret raised four sons with unwavering devotion: Lance and his wife, Lynn; Chris; Todd and his wife, Susan; and Mitchell and his wife, Anna. Her love extended to her cherished grandchildren—Syerra, Danger, and Triniti—whose lives brought her immense joy and pride.
Margaret’s life took her far beyond her Canadian roots. In the 1970s, she and Richard embarked on a bold journey to Nigeria, where Richard worked in education. There, Margaret’s resilience shone once again as she managed the challenges of life in a foreign country with grace and strength, always focused on providing stability for her family.
Above all, Margaret will be remembered for her tenacity, compassion, and wisdom. She was a woman who faced adversity with courage, who believed deeply in finishing what she started, and who cared for others with a heart full of love. Her legacy lives on in her children, grandchildren, and all those whose lives she touched through her work and kindness.
Margaret is survived by her sons, Lance (Lynn), Chris, Todd (Susan), and Mitchell (Anna); and her beloved grandchildren, Syerra, Danger, and Triniti. She also leaves behind a community of family and friends who will miss her dearly.
A celebration of Margaret’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Margaret’s honor to local chapters of animal humane societies, a reflection of her lifelong commitment to caring for others, including dogs in need.
