It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Lloyd Eldon MacDonald, affectionately known as “Mac”, on July 24, 2024, after a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s Disease surrounded by his loving family.
A proud Cape Bretoner and miner’s son, being born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, on February 11, 1944, to the late Hazel (nee Kelloway) and Rankin MacDonald. Mac would jokingly say he was spared being named Valentine, by his mother, had he been born on Valentine’s Day.
Mac left the island in 1963 and journeyed to the big city of Halifax to enlist in the Royal Canadian Air Force, eventually becoming an Air Force Policeman with an overseas posting to 4 Wing Baden-Soellingen, Germany (1967-1970) and subsequent postings to CFB Moncton, Gagetown and Shearwater twice. During this time and while attending night school, Mac graduated from Saint Mary’s University in 1979, obtaining his Bachelor of Arts with a major in Russian studies. In 1982, Mac remustered to Supply Technician, eventually retiring from the Canadian Armed Forces in 1990, and becoming a Canada Customers Officer the same year. Mac would re-enlist to become a Canadian Forces reservist (Supply Technician) with the 31 Service Battalion in Saint John, New Brunswick, proudly serving alongside his daughter for a time. When 911 occurred, Mac was one of the many Custom Officers suddenly being sent to Gander to assist with the customs clearance of the many confused and scared airline passengers. Upon reflection, Mac would say it was one of his proudest moments being a small part of history.
He was a great believer in volunteering and giving back to his community and over the years would serve on local school boards, host bicycle rodeos ensuring kids knew the rules of the road, Scout Leader, and various other organizations.
Mac would retire from public service in 2003, and eventually he and Cathy would relocate to Edmonton, Alberta, in June 2020, to reside with their daughter. Unfortunately, due to declining health, Mac would have to enter into Youville Home, St. Albert, in July 2021. As a former outfielder with CFB Moncton Men’s Softball championship team and even while in care, Mac faithfully watched his beloved Toronto Blue Jays always hoping for a repeat of their glory years as World Series Champions.
Mac is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Catherine ‘Cathy’ Anne MacDonald (nee Bowlin), whom he met at dance in Chatham while the band was playing Cathy’s Clown which eventually became “their song”. He is also survived by his daughter, Maria Sellars (Rick); son, Malcolm MacDonald (Heidi); grandchildren: HeatherAnn Masson (Chris), Rowan and Quinn MacDonald; and sisters, Melba and Yvonne.
He was predeceased by his sister, Bernice; and brothers: Bryson, Garfield and Maxwell.
In keeping with Mac’s wishes there will be no service. Lastly, we would like to send a special thank you to the staff at Covenant Health Youville Home St. Albert.
Arrangements entrusted to Connelly-McKinley St. Albert Funeral Home.
