January 9, 1936 – Spanish Town, Jamaica, West Indies
October 4, 2024 – Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
It is with great sadness that we share the peaceful passing of Ida, beloved mother of Robert (Noelle), Gregory (Kristyn) and Walter (Janna), dearly loved grandmother of Olivia, Kyle, Naomi, Logan, Sophie, Carter, and Lily, beloved sister of Nellie, King, Zie, and Winston. She also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews who miss her dearly.
Ida is remembered for being a social and political activist, an environmentalist, and a community member and leader. She spearheaded movements in her community to combat racism, support multiculturalism, successfully fought to halt the building of a highway through their residential community, and was responsible for the creation of a flourishing community garden. As an octogenarian, Ida continued to help and support her family, friends and community, and enjoyed walking to tend her garden, growing vegetables and flowers.
Ida Mae Richards lived a long, good, full life and is now at peace. We miss you.
