Obituary for
Henry Koon Lok Mah

It is with great sadness that the family of Henry Koon Lok Mah announce his passing with his children by his side on Tuesday, January 2, 2024 at the age of 91.

Henry was the loving husband of the late Elain Lo Yee Ling Mah, devoted father of Janice (Arthur), Kevin, and Joanne (Robert), cherished grandfather to Zienna, Zander, Kara, and Robert Jr., and beloved son of the late Nung Shang Mah and Yu Kam Fong Mah. He will also be greatly missed by his nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Henry was born in Toishan, Guangdong, China on November 4, 1932. At the age of 14 his family did not have enough funds to further his schooling. A relative who was a foreman at a shipyard in Hong Kong hired him to work. The shipyard funded and provided Henry the opportunity to attend night school. After working and attending school there for a few years, Henry’s late father’s business partner sponsored him to immigrate to Canada. He landed in Lacombe, Alberta and worked at a restaurant for 2 years. Henry continued to work in different restaurants across Alberta, including Rocky Mountain House, Grande Prairie, and Edmonton. He learned and honed many skills in the restaurant business including serving, cooking, operations, and even completing bartending school.

In the late 1960’s Henry returned to Hong Kong where he would meet his wife, Elain. Together they immigrated back to Edmonton in the early 1970’s. He would continue to work double shifts in restaurants while starting a family with Elain. In 1974 with their first daughter they moved to Grande Prairie. There he owned and operated a Western and Cantonese-style restaurant called the Midtown Restaurant and continued to grow his family. Henry successfully ran the Midtown until 1994, when Elain passed. He retired and moved with his 3 children to Edmonton in 1995, where they all completed degrees at the University of Alberta.

In his retirement, Henry continued to raise and support his children and then later enjoy time with his grandchildren. His time was also filled playing mah-jong, mall walking, meeting friends for coffee, playing solitaire, and reading the local and international Chinese newspapers each day.

The family would like to thank all the medical staff at the Strathcona Community Hospital and the University of Alberta Hospital for their services and compassionate support provided for Henry.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2024, 11 a.m. at Park Memorial Chapel, 9709 – 111 Avenue, Edmonton, Alberta with interment in Northern Lights Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
