It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. William Sharun on December 16, 2024, after a courageous and brief battle with pancreatic cancer.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Carol; children, Kate and Aubrey Zalaski, Jon and Priscilla Sharun; his beloved grandchildren, Michael, Meagan, and Alex Zalaski, and Gavin and Elora Sharun. Bill will be deeply missed by his in-laws, Janet and Spencer Bryson, Doug Stollery, and Scott Graham; honorary siblings, Dodi Barnard, John Tanasichuk, and Bill Tanasichuk; along with many cherished cousins, nephews, nieces, and friends. He was predeceased by his father, John Sharun; honorary parents, John and Catherine Tanasichuk; brother and sister-in-law, Orist and Elsie Sharun; cousin-in-law, Ray Barnard; and parents-in-law, Bob and Shirley Stollery.
Bill was a proud Edmontonian, a University of Alberta Dentistry graduate, and a Delta Upsilon brother. For over 45 years, he served his community as a compassionate dentist in downtown Edmonton, earning the trust of generations, some of whom became third-generation patients. Known for his expertise and the warm, welcoming environment created by his exceptional staff, Bill’s legacy endures in the lasting relationships he built and the care he provided.
A natural leader, Bill served in many professional roles, including President of the Edmonton and District Dental Society, President of the Alberta Dental Association, and President of the University of Alberta Dental Alumni Association. He was a Governor of the Canadian Dental Association and a Fellow of the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists, and the Pierre Fauchard Academy.
Bill traveled on dental missions in Central America, South America, Africa, and the Philippines, providing care to underserved communities. He also dedicated time to organizations like Homeless Connect Edmonton and Kindness in Action, and managed various minor hockey teams. Bill was deeply involved in children’s health, serving as President of the Edmonton and Northern Ronald McDonald House and Chair of its expansion campaign. He also served as a trustee of the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation, a director of the Stollery Charitable Foundation, and was an active member of the Downtown Edmonton Rotary Club. His service earned multiple awards, including the Alberta Dental Association Award of Excellence, the University of Alberta Alumni Honour Award, and the Dental Alumni of the Year Award.
Known for his vibrant, colourful clothing and infectious laughter, Bill was a firm believer in the power of a positive mental attitude. His unwavering optimism, kindness, and sense of humor brightened every room he entered. Whether practicing dentistry, attending sporting events, hosting friends at Shandy Cove, or spending time with family, Bill embraced life with passion and joy. He and Carol were the ultimate hosts, creating a warm and welcoming environment that brought people together.
More than anything, Bill loved his family. He took great pride in watching Kate and Jon grow up and start families of their own, and he cherished every moment with his grandchildren. Bill’s legacy of love, generosity, and service will continue to inspire all who knew him.
Bill, your light, laughter, and boundless positivity will be missed more than words can express. Thank you for showing us how to live life with kindness, joy, and love. You will forever remain in our hearts.
A Celebration of Bill’s Life will be held later in the new year. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bill’s memory to the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation or a charity of your choice.
Arrangements entrusted to Connelly-McKinley Downtown Funeral Home.
